Ferret First Aid

Disclaimer: WE ARE NOT PRACTICING VETERINARIANS! PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH AND TALK TO YOUR VET!

Yesterday someone asked, "What else should I have in my ferret first aid kit?"

That question has a long answer. The short answer is everything! However, we are gonna talk about basic triage. "What do I need to do right now so i can make it to the vet?"

This photo is what we consider to be the absolute minimum to have. Many items are easily obtained and affordable. Some are not. (I already see something i left out...) Many of these items are going to determine whether or not your baby is going to make it in an emergency.

To keep it simple I am just going to go over the picture starting from the back and working my way to the front.

Carivore care: Ideal for sick babies, good source of calories, can be used to put on weight. Use alone or mix with your own soup.

Poopin Pumkin: Used to promote a healthy GI tract. Can help with small blockages, hairball, constipation

Silver Honey. This is an antibacterial ointment that promotes rapid wound healing.

Sucralfate (Carafate): This saves lives. Think of it like pepto for ferrets. It coats the stomach and protects ulcers and other sores so they can heal. It also prevents side effects from prednisolone.

Pedialyte: Used for dehydration. Get the flavored no sugar option.

Karo syrup (or honey): used when a ferret has extremely low blood sugar. Apply to your finger and rub it on your ferrets gums. This is a temporary fix and can cause blood sugar to spike. This is not a vet replacement!

Corn starch: a great home remedy to stop bleeding such as cutting a toe nail to close.

The larger container back right: This is our homemade soupies. We do not recommend Marshalls Uncle Jim's.
Soup typically will get the pickiest ferret to eat.

Pill crusher/pill cutter: Used to crush pills and to cut pills in half or quarters.

Oral Dextrose: a much faster way to raise blood sugar.
Only use this if you have spoken to your vet regarding dosage.

AlphaTrak/Blood glucose monitor: there are different options out there and the price varies. Do your research and make sure you can use it on ferrets!

Baby food: Chicken flavor is good. Another option to help give a ferret calories when needed.

A syringe with a needle: We use this to suck up urine samples. It works really well because of the tiny tip.

Self adhesive bandage: This one is fairly self explanatory.

Miscellaneous feeder syringe/droppers: These are used to give meds and of course if you need to force feed your baby. (This does happen)

Optixcare: or equivalent: Used for mild eye injuries. Like a scratched eyeball.

Gauze pads: This one should also be fairly obvious.

Q-tips/swabs: Great for cleaning or applying ointment to small wounds.

The cone of shame: When they need to leave something alone like stitches or ears. (If there is enough interest, I will make a short video how a made such a small one out of a larger one.

Not pictured: Vaseline petroleum jelly. This is also used to help with blockages.

We also have about 50 other items in our kit. However, for someone with 1 or 2 ferrets, this is a good start.

❤️ BEATRICE'S PATHOLOGY RESULTS ARE IN ❤️

WE HAVE THE NEWS WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. 🥹🐾

Dr. Tony personally called us today with Beatrice's pathology results.

And we could not be happier.

NO CANCER.

NO OTHER DISEASE.

NOTHING LEFT OF THE PROBLEMATIC SPLEEN.

Everything was contained to the spleen.

That means we can finally take a deep breath.
After everything we've been through with our Bea Baby, this is the phone call we were praying for.

Dr. Tony expects her to continue getting better and better as time goes on, and after watching her come back to life over the past couple of weeks, we are absolutely thrilled.

She's running.

She's climbing.

She's eating.

She's being her crazy little self again.

And now we know there isn't something else hiding in the background that we need to be worrying about.

Our Bea Baby gets to keep getting better. ❤️

We honestly couldn't be happier.

And we cannot thank all of you enough.

You were there when we needed to raise the money for her surgery.

You followed every update.

You worried with us.

You celebrated the good news with us.

And you helped give Beatrice the chance to get to this moment.

Thank you. From the bottom of our hearts.

There is still one more chapter in this story.

🐾 NEXT UP: 60 DAYS — TAIL AMPUTATION

For now, though, we're going to enjoy this victory.

We're going to let Beatrice continue healing.

And we're going to enjoy watching our girl thrive.

No cancer. No disease. The problem was contained.

That is one heck of an update. ❤️

We love you, Bea Baby.

And apparently, we're going to have you around for a whole lot longer. 🥹🐾❤️

❤️ BEATRICE — 7 DAYS POST-SURGERY ❤️

Our Bea Baby had her one-week follow-up appointment today! 🥹🐾

And we have some really, really good news.

Dr. Tony was very excited to see her progress. Beatrice was incredibly active at the vet, and she's been just as active at home.

In fact, we're seeing something we haven't seen from her in months.

SHE'S RUNNING.

SHE'S CLIMBING.

SHE'S BEING BEATRICE. ❤️

We removed her bandages on Saturday, and you could practically see the relief on her face. 😂 She was SO happy to be free of them!

And now, watching her move around and do all the things she loves to do again has been absolutely incredible.

Based on how well she's healing and the progress she's made, we can plan to bring her back in approximately 60 days for her tail amputation.

For now, though, we're letting our girl enjoy being comfortable, active, and spoiled. ❤️

There is still one thing we're waiting and hoping for.

Beatrice's spleen was sent out for pathological examination. We are waiting for the results to confirm whether there is any cancer or other underlying disease present.

That is the part that still makes us nervous.

But we're hopeful.

We're hopeful that those results will come back clean.

We're hopeful that this little girl has many, many more years ahead of her.

Because after watching her struggle for months, seeing her running and climbing again is something we never want to take for granted.

We want our Bea Baby to be with us for YEARS. ❤️

And we want to thank every single person who has been following her journey.

You watched her before surgery.

You helped us get her through it.

You celebrated every little improvement with us.

And now you're watching her come back to life.

Thank you for caring about our girl. Thank you for cheering her on. And thank you for being part of Beatrice's journey. ❤️🐾

We'll let you know as soon as we have those pathology results.

Until then…

Keep running, climbing, and being your crazy little self, Bea Baby. We love you. 🥹❤️

❤️ BEATRICE — 48 HOURS POST-SURGERY ❤️

Our Bea Baby is doing AMAZING. 🥹🐾

We are still seeing fantastic improvements, and every time we check on her, we find ourselves a little less worried.

Beatrice is bright, alert, and very aware of everything going on around her. She's using the bathroom regularly, drinking plenty of water, and — most importantly — she has a very healthy appetite.

And she's not just living on soupies! 😂

We are definitely seeing her eating her kibble, too.

We've also been finding her in different places around her room, which tells us she's getting up and moving around on her own.

Honestly, after everything this little girl has been through, we don't think we could ask for much more at this point.

❤️ WE ARE SO PROUD OF HER.

Every day that passes with Beatrice doing a little better is another day that we can breathe a little easier.

The surgery was difficult.

The recovery is still ongoing.

And we know she isn't completely out of the woods yet.

But right now?

She's eating. She's drinking. She's using the bathroom. She's moving around. She's alert. And she's happy.

And that makes our hearts incredibly happy. ❤️

We love our Bea Baby more than we can put into words.

And we know that so many of you love her, too.

Thank you for being there for her.

Thank you for helping us get her through surgery.

Thank you for following every update, cheering her on, sharing her story, and giving her the opportunity to keep fighting.

Beatrice is still here. And she's doing beautifully. 🥹❤️🐾

We'll keep watching, loving, and spoiling her every step of the way.

Keep going, Bea Baby. We've got you. ❤️

❤️ BEATRICE — 24 HOURS AFTER SURGERY ❤️

And today, we have some really good news. 🥹🐾

Beatrice is 24 hours post-surgery, and we are excited and incredibly relieved by what we're seeing.

She has been eating and drinking normally, and she's been using the bathroom multiple times. Everything is looking normal there, which is exactly what we want to see.

And today…

She's more active. ❤️

I can see it in her eyes.

That bright, happy, comfortable look that tells us she's feeling more like herself.

She's bright-eyed and bushy-tailed! 🥰

She's getting plenty of soupies throughout the day, and it appears she's also helping herself to some kibble.
We're not getting ahead of ourselves — she still has a lot of recovering to do, and these next couple of days are important. But after the difficult surgery she went through, this is exactly the kind of progress we hoped to see.

If she continues improving, we'll eventually bring in one or two of her friends to keep her company. We'll choose some of her older, less-active friends so she can have companionship without having a bunch of crazy ferret energy bouncing around her while she heals. 😂

For now, we're watching her closely, keeping her comfortable, and giving her all the love and soupies she wants.

And there's something we don't ever want to lose sight of:

Beatrice is still here because YOU showed up for her. ❤️

You donated.

You shared.

You commented.

You cheered her on.

You helped us get her through surgery.

And now we're getting to watch this little girl wake up, eat, drink, use the bathroom, explore, and look happy again.

We are so incredibly grateful.

Thank you for giving Beatrice this chance.
We'll keep updating you every step of the way.
Keep fighting, sweet girl. You've got a whole army behind you. ❤️🐾

❤️ BEATRICE — OUT OF SURGERY ❤️
SHE'S HOME. 🥹🐾

Beatrice is officially out of surgery, and we finally have an update for you.

The splenectomy was successful. ❤️

However, this was a much more difficult procedure than anticipated and took approximately 2 hours.

Because of how long and difficult the surgery was, Dr. Tony did not feel comfortable keeping Beatrice under anesthesia any longer. Her safety had to come first, so the tail amputation will have to be done at a later date.

And honestly?

We are completely okay with that.

Of course, having both procedures done at the same time would have been more cost-effective, but that doesn't matter nearly as much to us as knowing Dr. Tony made the safest decision for Beatrice.

We trust him completely.

And right now, we're just incredibly happy to have our girl HOME. ❤️

💰 AND THEN THERE'S THIS…

Because of all of YOU, we raised an absolutely incredible $2,130 for Beatrice.

Her updated bill for today's surgery is $1,767.64 — for the splenectomy only.

That means we already have funds set aside for her upcoming tail amputation.

And we have to tell you something that completely floored us.

A $650 donation came in late during our fundraising push.

$650.

There honestly aren't words big enough to describe what that meant to us.

When these emergencies happen, we never know what is going to happen.

We hope.

We ask.

We cross our fingers.

And then somehow, every single time, this incredible community shows up for these little animals who need us.

You showed up for Beatrice.

Every donation.

Every comment.

Every share.

Every person who stopped scrolling long enough to help.

YOU made a difference today.

And we are absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude.

But our work isn't quite finished yet.

❤️ THE NEXT 3 DAYS ARE CRUCIAL.

Beatrice needs to show steady improvement each day as she recovers from this difficult surgery.

So for now, we're going to let our girl rest.

We're going to watch her closely.

We're going to follow Dr. Tony's instructions.

And we're going to take this one day at a time.

We will absolutely keep all of you updated as she recovers.

Because you didn't just donate to a surgery.

You became part of Beatrice's story.

From the bottom of our hearts…

THANK YOU.

Thank you for believing in her.

Thank you for believing in us.

And thank you for showing us, once again, just how incredible the Risky Business family really is.

She's home. She's through surgery. And she's got a whole lot of people rooting for her. ❤️🐾
