Our trainers are back after spending the week at the Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers!

A huge thank you to the donor who covered nearly $6,000 in expenses for the school tuition and lodging for the week. We are grateful for the opportunity, and I can’t wait to hear everything they learned.

And I have to say, it warmed my heart to see the welcome-back note another one of our staff left for them when they got back.

We have a pretty great crew around here.

Welcome back, We missed you!

We’re investing in our trainers!
Next week, members of the Monkey Tail Ranch/K9 Training Concepts team are heading to the Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers for an intensive week of continuing education.

Good dog training is never about thinking you already know everything. It’s about continuing to learn, sharpening your skills, asking better questions, and bringing new ideas back to the dogs and people you work with every day.

We’re excited for our team to spend the week learning, training, and probably talking about dogs from morning until night.

This is a class we designed for our Immersion students, and here it is for the first time outside that format. It takes the key principles we cover in our core obedience courses and focuses them exclusively on companion dogs. A few of the main topics covered include…. Relationship: What is it and why is it important?

Engagement: A foundational principle, includes focus, readiness to learn, and value in handler.

Communication system for pet dogs (simplified markers and the importance of a conditioned punisher, as well as other forms of verbal and physical communication).

What is the appropriate level of motivation for a pet dog? When is less more?

What behaviors do we teach, and why?

What should the behaviors look like (criteria setting)

Black and white versus grey behaviors.

Goal setting (what does the dog/handler team need, and in what environments do they need to perform)

Developing interactive rewards (it’s not what you get, it’s the interaction)

How do we fade, or reduce the frequency, of rewards? When and how to transition from continuous to intermittent reinforcement.

Alternative rewards and alternative forms of feedback.

How do we shorten our timelines while still being fair to the dog?

Leash pressure and “layering” the leash over behaviors.

Combining luring and leash pressure for shortened timelines.

How and when to use negative reinforcement and negative and positive punishment.

Verbal cues versus physical cues.

Handling drills for grooming and vet visits.

Management for pet dog owners (an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure).

Conditioned Arousal and its role in allowing calmness.

Electronic collar work for the pet dog.

Do I want/need to be free of the tools?

Handler body language, energetics, tone of voice, and controlling arousal levels.

Should pet dogs play (tug/retrieve), and what are appropriate games?

Enrichment/Exercise for the pet dog (things for clients to do beyond obedience).

Biological fulfillment and its role in preventing behavior problems and making a happy dog.
The most important behaviors and more!

MORE CRIMINALS HAVE ARRIVED.

Apparently our last round of mugshots did absolutely nothing to deter crime at K9TC.

These suspects should be considered adorable and highly manipulative.

More criminals coming soon.

One thing I’ve learned over the years: good ideas can come from anywhere.

Our swim program started because a boarder saw a dog doing it at another facility and suggested we start one too.

Rat Hunt came from an employee who thought it would be a fun addition to what we offer.

Dog baths? Another staff member’s idea. She wanted to give our boarding dogs the option to go home smelling fresh and clean — and even designed our dog washing station.

Our Weekly Board & Train program came from someone looking for an option that wasn’t our traditional four-week Board & Train and suggested weekly boarding instead.

None of these started with me sitting at a desk thinking, “I need a brilliant idea.”

They came from people around us paying attention, asking questions, seeing a need, and speaking up.

I think good organizations get better when people feel comfortable saying, “Hey… what if we tried this?”

So if you have an idea for a class, service, activity, event, or something you think would make K9 Training Concepts better, tell us!

We may not use every idea, but we absolutely want to hear them. Some of our favorite programs started with someone simply saying, “What if…?”
