Where Do Crested Geckos Actually Come From? 🦎

We love them as docile, hardy pets, but have you ever wondered how your crested gecko would live if it were out in the wild?

To find a wild "crestie," you’d have to travel to the South Pacific to a dense, isolated island group called New Caledonia. Specifically, they thrive in the lush, humid rainforests of the main island (Grande Terre) and the Isle of Pines.

Understanding their natural habitat is the ultimate "cheat code" to keeping them happy and healthy in our homes. Here is a look at a day in the life of a wild crested gecko:

🍃 Life in the Understory

Unlike some lizards that bask high up in the tree canopy, crested geckos are strictly understory dwellers. They live in the lower shrubs, small trees, and dense foliage, rarely venturing more than 10 to 15 feet off the forest floor. This is why vertical enclosures packed with climbing branches and thick foliage are so essential—it makes them feel safely hidden from predators!

☀️ The Island Climate

New Caledonia isn't a scorching desert; it's a subtropical rainforest. Temperatures typically range from the high 60s to the low 80s, accompanied by heavy evening rainfall and high humidity. Because it cools down significantly at night, crested geckos don't require the intense heat lamps that desert reptiles do.

🌙 Nighttime Foragers

During the day, wild cresties are completely inactive, sleeping deeply while camouflaged against tree bark or tucked into hollows. Once the sun sets, they come alive! They use their incredible night vision and sticky toe pads to leap through the branches to hunt.

🍓 A Truly Dynamic Diet

In the wild, they are opportunistic omnivores. They don’t just eat bugs! While they love crickets and other moving prey, a huge portion of their wild diet consists of overripe, rotting fruits and nectar they lick from flowers. High-quality powdered diets recreate this perfect balance perfectly.

🦖 The "Lazarus" Lizard

Fun fact: Crested geckos were actually thought to be extinct for almost a century until they were miraculously rediscovered in 1994 after a tropical storm! Every single crested gecko in the hobby today traces its roots back to those wild island survivors.

If you've ever watched a chameleon navigate the branches, you know exactly why these prehistoric-looking creatures are some of the most fascinating animals on the planet. Veiled Chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) make absolutely incredible display pets for anyone looking to bring a true marvel of nature into their home!

Between their striking colors, their prominent head crests (called a casque), and those calm, deliberate movements, they are a total joy to watch and care for.Speaking of chameleons... we have some big dreams brewing here at Bayou Bloodline Exotics! We are working hard behind the scenes and hoping to have baby chameleons available next season. Keep your fingers crossed for us, and stay tuned for updates as things progress! 🦎✨

To celebrate these amazing tree-dwellers, here are a few mind-blowing chameleon fun facts:
360-Degree Vision: Their eyes can move completely independently of one another. This means a chameleon can look right at you with one eye while simultaneously tracking a feeder insect behind them with the other!

The "Veil" Has a Purpose: That tall helmet on a Veiled Chameleon's head isn't just for style. In the wild, it acts as a water collection system. Morning dew trickles down the ridges of the casque right into their mouths!

Super-Powered Tongues: A chameleon's tongue can be up to one and a half to two times the length of its entire body! It launches out at lightning speed, capturing prey in a fraction of a second using a specialized muscle and a suction-cup-like tip.

Mood Rings of the Reptile World: Contrary to popular belief, chameleons don't change color to blend into their surroundings. Instead, they change colors based on their mood, temperature, and communication with other chameleons!

We are officially expanding! We’ve started raising our own Isopod colonies and should have some ready for their new homes in just a few months!

If you’ve been looking to go Bioactive, these "Cleanup Crews" are the missing piece. Here’s why your reptile needs them:

Natural Cleaning: They eat waste, shed skin, and decaying plant matter so you don't have to!

Healthier Environment: They help prevent mold and keep the soil healthy.

Less Stress: A bioactive setup mimics your pet’s natural habitat, reducing stress and encouraging natural behaviors like digging.

Low Maintenance: Once established, a bioactive tank basically takes care of itself!

Stay tuned for updates on species and availability! Who’s ready to go bio? 👇
