Where Do Crested Geckos Actually Come From? 🦎
We love them as docile, hardy pets, but have you ever wondered how your crested gecko would live if it were out in the wild?
To find a wild "crestie," you’d have to travel to the South Pacific to a dense, isolated island group called New Caledonia. Specifically, they thrive in the lush, humid rainforests of the main island (Grande Terre) and the Isle of Pines.
Understanding their natural habitat is the ultimate "cheat code" to keeping them happy and healthy in our homes. Here is a look at a day in the life of a wild crested gecko:
🍃 Life in the Understory
Unlike some lizards that bask high up in the tree canopy, crested geckos are strictly understory dwellers. They live in the lower shrubs, small trees, and dense foliage, rarely venturing more than 10 to 15 feet off the forest floor. This is why vertical enclosures packed with climbing branches and thick foliage are so essential—it makes them feel safely hidden from predators!
☀️ The Island Climate
New Caledonia isn't a scorching desert; it's a subtropical rainforest. Temperatures typically range from the high 60s to the low 80s, accompanied by heavy evening rainfall and high humidity. Because it cools down significantly at night, crested geckos don't require the intense heat lamps that desert reptiles do.
🌙 Nighttime Foragers
During the day, wild cresties are completely inactive, sleeping deeply while camouflaged against tree bark or tucked into hollows. Once the sun sets, they come alive! They use their incredible night vision and sticky toe pads to leap through the branches to hunt.
🍓 A Truly Dynamic Diet
In the wild, they are opportunistic omnivores. They don’t just eat bugs! While they love crickets and other moving prey, a huge portion of their wild diet consists of overripe, rotting fruits and nectar they lick from flowers. High-quality powdered diets recreate this perfect balance perfectly.
🦖 The "Lazarus" Lizard
Fun fact: Crested geckos were actually thought to be extinct for almost a century until they were miraculously rediscovered in 1994 after a tropical storm! Every single crested gecko in the hobby today traces its roots back to those wild island survivors.
