I must be at work this beautiful weekend to fund their extravagant lifestyle. Here's a little clip from our drive last weekend. With the mosquitoes beginning to emerge, I think our days of driving through the woods are becoming limited until fall.

I think Kjaer felt riding in the round pen was a bit too much like kindergarten all over again.

I started him in a baby shank bit as we begin working on neck reining and getting him a little more finished western. He’s turning into a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none — at least until I figure out what he truly enjoys most. Either way, he’ll always be the kind of horse I can pull out to do just about any job. He did get to go for a stroll down the road when we were done. Hopefully that made up for the kindergarten treatment.

We are experiencing some inclement weather conditions. In case anyone was curious about the hardiness of the Fjord (especially when there is food involved) vs. some other breeds… here is some visual evidence. The Fjords are completely unbothered while my Quarter Horse takes immediate cover 😆.

Snuck in one more drive before this morning before the heat rolls in this afternoon. Now it’s time for me to become an indoor cat and retreat to my cool basement until evening chores. I truly do not enjoy hot weather at all. 😅

Every spring I wonder what kind of body condition my old man will have hiding underneath that winter fur. It’s a question a lot of senior horse owners start asking… how many more winters?

Despite his food aversions, he came through this one still looking pretty darn good. He may be fully retired now, but this horse was my childhood horse and later became a safe, accomplished lesson horse — even with his often grumpy demeanor. He taught so many people how to ride.

He’s also the only horse on this farm that could never have a price tag attached to him.

Happy Memorial Day. Today we remember and honor those who gave their lives in service to our country. I remember the members of my own family tree who made that sacrifice. Enjoy the extra day with your horses, family, and those you care about. 🇺🇸

Gertie got plenty of attention today too. She got saddled up, worked on groundwork, mounting block training, and some weight in the stirrups. A week from tomorrow, she and I are headed to c**t starting boot camp! I’m excited to learn some new things.

Not sure what I’ll do with all my spare time once all my baby fjords are all started under saddle… (Kidding — there’s always plenty to do.)

Field work and road miles for Kjaer and Lena today. To save on gas, we put them to work pulling the rock wagon in the field before heading out for about 3.5 miles on the roads.
