Last week I had the opportunity to spend the week learning from and the amazing faculty at the Victoria Stilwell Academy. I met so many great people and worked with so many amazing dogs

Meet Cleo! An 8 yr old Miniature Pinscher. When a pup first learns loose leash walking, I like to teach them to sit when we stop and then slowly fade that requirement out as they become more proficient. However, Cleo suffers from joint problems that make it uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time so we adjust to what works for her. It really makes no difference to me whether she sits or lays down. What I want is her attention and a loose leash. (Look at that eye contact!) 👀

If your pup is struggling to perform the behaviors you’re asking, it’s always important to consider any health/medical problems that may be getting in the way, so always consult with your vet 🧑‍⚕️ when behavior issues arise! It will make training much easier and enjoyable for the both of you! 🐾

Socialization doesn’t necessarily need to include interaction with other humans or dogs. Socialization can simply be exposure to different stimuli and watching from a far. In this photo we are simply sitting in the front yard and watching the cars, neighbors, and birds go by. And of course I am marking and reinforcing his good behavior and for not reacting to everything he sees😅😂

Remember - What gets reinforced, gets repeated. We haven’t worked on duration for a “place” behavior, but we have worked on the behavior enough that she chooses to lay on her bed even when not asked. She knows that her bed is where she gets a ton of reinforcement, so why not spend some time there. I’d rather have a dog that has been taught how to behave without my constant guidance, than a dog that needs to constantly be cued and told what to do 🐶

Socialization isn’t only about interacting with people or other dogs, but also exposure to novel stimuli. If you want your dog to be comfortable with car rides, you need to expose them to car rides as early as possible 🚗 But most importantly, you need to make sure you make this a positive experience and reinforce behaviors you want 😁 Remember, behaviors that get reinforced get repeated! 🐶

I find that teaching a dog to “relax on a mat” can be very useful, especially in novel places. I don’t put this behavior on cue because I want our pups to choose to lay on their mat whenever they see it. Jeffrey is a very energetic Doberman 🐾, but he loves lying on his mat no matter where it is. We’re still working on keeping him from moving it about and “making his bed” but this was his first time at this house since he was a puppy and he did so well! 😍

I highly recommend the Klimb platform by 🐾 Once taught, you can use the “climb” cue in a variety of scenarios like at the vet office when you need your dog to step up onto the scale and stay still to take their weight. It makes for a much easier process for you and a better experience for your dog!
