We’re trying something new this year and using annuals like oats shown here to fill in gaps, increase diversity, improve soil structure, and increase grazable biomass in our perennial hay or pasture fields. 

These were broadcast 80 days ago. Look at the soil clinging on the roots - that’s what we need!! Rhizosheaths are a sign of biological activity, and this Coloma sand needs all the help it can get.

Look forward to sharing more as we now have a no-till drill and really plan to work on building our soils in new and better ways.

As we work through our beef sales for the year, we are so kindly and generously reminded how appreciative our customers are.

How we choose to mange our cattle, land and overall ecosystem has brought many of you to us. We can’t say how important and valued your kind words are, and how encouraging.

This is hard work, this is everyday, this takes learning everyday, observing and understanding how to work best with what Mother Nature gives us.

We sure are thankful for the rain that came end of August.

It set us back up to graze longer than we had thought was possible with most our fields dormant and brown. This forage has been resting 79 days, and this field is a newly established pasture spring of 25 on very poor doing sand, so for what I have here I can not complain.

We had a goal of grazing till 11/1, not sure if we will make it but we will be close!
