☀️🐾 Warm Weather Pet Tips 🐾☀️

The temperatures are heating up, and it's important to help keep your pets safe and comfortable this summer!

Here are a few warm weather reminders:
💧 Always provide fresh, cool water
Make sure your pet has access to water both indoors and outdoors.
🌳 Seek shade
If your pet is spending time outside, provide plenty of shaded areas to escape the sun.
🚶 Walk during cooler hours
Early mornings and evenings are best. Midday temperatures can be dangerous for both pets and their paws.
🐾 Check the pavement
Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's paws.
🚗 Never leave pets in a parked car
Even with the windows cracked, temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
🌾 Watch for foxtails
We're seeing a large number of foxtail cases right now. Check your pet's ears, paws, eyes, and coat after spending time outdoors.
⚠️ Know the signs of heatstroke:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Weakness or lethargy
• Vomiting
• Difficulty walking
• Collapse

If your pet shows signs of heatstroke, seek veterinary care immediately.

Veterinarians say they’re seeing more pets than usual having problems with “foxtails.” It's also coming earlier than it usually does.

“We are definitely seeing a major increase in them and way earlier this year and way more cases of it than we have in the past,” Utah Veterinary Medical Association President Doctor Tonya Hardy said.

We're not talking about the kind that come off the grill—we mean your four-legged hot dogs! 🐶

Looking for ways to help your pup stay cool during the summer heat? Try these fun ideas:

🧊 Frozen treats made with pet-safe ingredients
💦 A kiddie pool splash session in the backyard
🌅 Early morning or evening walks when temperatures are lower
🍉 Pet-safe frozen watermelon or fruit treats (in moderation)
🐾 Indoor enrichment games during the hottest parts of the day

🌾 Foxtail Awareness: We're Seeing a LOT of Cases Right Now! 🌾

Foxtails may look harmless, but these dried grass seed heads can cause serious problems for pets. Recently, we've seen a significant increase in foxtail-related cases, and we want to help keep your furry family members safe.

⚠️ Common places foxtails can become lodged:
• Ears
• Eyes
• Nose
• Between toes
• Skin and coat

🚨 Signs your pet may have a foxtail:
• Excessive sneezing
• Head shaking or ear scratching
• Squinting or eye discharge
• Licking or chewing at paws
• Swelling, redness, or draining wounds

Unlike other plant materials, foxtails don't break down naturally and can continue to migrate through tissue, causing pain, infection, and sometimes requiring surgical removal.

🐾 Prevention Tips:
✔️ Avoid areas with tall, dry grasses
✔️ Check your pet's paws, ears, eyes, and coat after walks or outdoor play
✔️ Keep long hair between paw pads trimmed
✔️ Contact us promptly if you notice any concerning symptoms

If you think your pet may have encountered a foxtail, don't wait—early treatment can help prevent more serious complications.

If you are worried your pet has potential foxtails, give us a call at (801) 930-0632 or visit our online booking at https://app.vello.idexx.com/book/rosecreekanimal.
