🌻 Today’s CSA share pickup was full of fresh greens, good conversation, and a few surprise garden guests.

We enjoyed having CSA members visit the market garden, along with an unexpected number of frogs and toads. 🐸 Always a good sign of life in the garden.

Behind the scenes, work is underway on new irrigation as we get ready for the upcoming heat wave!

One of my favorite parts of gardening is finding new ways to push a space to its growing limit.

With heat-sensitive crops like lettuce, that means thinking beyond the obvious open bed. Location, lighting, spacing, and timing all matter. By planting in creative pockets of the garden — near taller crops, along edges, or in areas that get filtered light — you can create small microclimates that help greens stay cooler, hold moisture, and keep producing longer into the season.

Succession planting is a big part of that too. Lettuce is not a one-and-done crop. New rounds need to be started before the current ones are finished, so there is always something coming behind the harvest.

Ideally, I like to have at least two crops working in every space at all times — one growing now, and one coming next. It is a puzzle, but that is also the fun of it.

Good gardening is part planning, part experimenting, and part learning how to let the whole space work together.

Companion planting is a way to maximize space, create small microclimates, protect heat-sensitive crops in summer, and build more biodiversity into the garden.

More diversity means more pollinators, more beneficial insects, healthier soil, and a stronger garden ecosystem overall.

🍅 Tomato pruning is one of those simple garden tasks that can make a big difference.

Removing extra suckers and crowded lower growth helps improve airflow, keep plants manageable, and support healthier fruit production as the season goes on.

Save this for your tomato plants, and send it to someone growing tomatoes this year.

🫜 Radish cost ~$3/per bundle at the grocery store. A pack of 300 radish seed cost about $2, and they mature in as little as 20 days, from seed to harvest.

There's a lot more growing in the market garden. Check out a full crop list at:

At this point, raising chickens is feeling a little too similar to teaching kindergarten.
