Took a couple of fun shots of these two boys together. The lighter animal is a Karma Blood Python, while the darker animal is a Pollen Blood Python. They are not related to one another, but side by side they make for a pretty interesting genetics comparison. Education is at the core of what we do and what we believe.
In Blood Pythons, Karma describes the visual effect associated with an animal being heterozygous for both T+ Albino and T- Albino at the same time. In other words, the animal carries one copy of each recessive albino mutation without being visually albino. The combination can produce beautifully saturated pigmentation, which can become even more striking as Blood Pythons progress through their ontogenetic color change during their first several years of life.
“Heterozygous,” often shortened to “het,” simply means an animal carries one copy of a particular recessive gene alongside a normal copy. In most cases, being het for a recessive trait does not create an obvious visual change. Karma is particularly interesting because the simultaneous presence of both albino heterozygosities can influence the animal’s appearance.
Tyrosinase is a copper-containing enzyme involved in the production of melanin.
T+ Albino, or Tyrosinase Positive Albino, retains some ability to produce melanin because functional tyrosinase is present, although normal pigmentation is disrupted.
T- Albino, or Tyrosinase Negative Albino, involves the absence or loss of functional tyrosinase activity, preventing normal melanin production and producing the more traditionally recognized red, yellow, and white albino appearance.
Pollen, on the other hand, is an incomplete dominant mutation. It generally produces increased red coloration along with a tighter dorsal pattern that can develop into a wavy, striped appearance. The lateral pattern can become incredibly intricate while still appearing unusually clean, often flaring upward almost like flames. Some animals also develop prominent spotting or “dots” within the pattern.
