🐴 🐮HELP US GIVE A BIG CREEK VALLEY WELCOME TO DR. SARAH WINGO! 🐮🐴

It’s time to introduce our relief veterinarian! Dr. Sarah Wingo will be joining Creek Valley Veterinary Services next week and will be with us for the next 6 weeks, helping cover regularly scheduled appointments as well as daytime and after-hours emergencies.

“Hi! I’m Sarah Wingo! 👋 I grew up on a farm in Nashville, TN, and attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville for both my undergraduate and veterinary degrees. After veterinary school, I continued my education with a year-long specialized internship at an equine hospital in Ocala, Florida. Since completing my internship in 2023, I’ve been working as a traveling veterinarian.

My professional interests include emergency cases, reproduction, and herd wellness, but I love the variety that veterinary medicine brings, so I’ll happily see just about anything! 🐴🐮🐐🐑🐷

I also have a special interest in performance horses, including lameness and poor-performance evaluations, with the goal of keeping horses feeling their best and performing at their peak.

When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me skiing or hiking in the mountains somewhere!” 🏔️ - Dr. Sarah

If you happened to miss the announcement on my personal page… Baby Boy B will be making his arrival very soon! 🩵

Our family is beyond excited for this new chapter, but I also know that as a solo veterinarian, many of my Creek Valley Veterinary Services clients are probably wondering what this means for the care of your animals.

The good news? We’ve got a plan!

To ensure your animals continue receiving the care you’ve come to expect, I’m excited to share that Dr. Sarah Wingo will be temporarily joining Creek Valley Veterinary Services as our relief veterinarian. She’ll be helping provide both routine and emergency care while I’m away, so you can rest easy knowing your horses and livestock will be in excellent hands. Stay tuned later this week for a formal introduction—you’ll get to learn more about Dr. Wingo and give her a warm Creek Valley welcome!

So, what’s the best way to continue supporting us during this exciting season?

📞 Keep calling 330-341-2788 (same number as normal) with emergencies or texting the same number for appointments, emergencies, medication refills, or any questions you may have. Tamie, Alonna, and Dr. Wingo will be here to make sure you and your animals continue receiving the same compassionate care you’ve always counted on.

To my amazing Creek Valley family—thank you. Your trust, loyalty, and support have allowed me to build the practice I’ve always dreamed of, and I couldn’t be more grateful. 🌫️ Poor Air Quality? Your Horse Feels It Too. 🐴

With smoky skies and poor air quality, it’s important to remember that horses can be affected just like people. Even healthy horses may experience irritation, while those with asthma (heaves/RAO), allergies, or other respiratory conditions are at an even greater risk.

🐎 When air quality is poor:
• Reduce or postpone strenuous exercise and training.
• Provide plenty of fresh, clean water.
• Offer hay in a way that minimizes dust (consider soaking or steaming hay if appropriate).
• Keep stalls well-ventilated, but avoid adding additional dust from sweeping or bedding during smoky conditions.
• Watch closely for signs of respiratory distress, including:
🔹 Increased respiratory rate or effort
🔹 Coughing
🔹 Nasal discharge
🔹 Exercise intolerance
🔹 Flared nostrils or labored breathing

Remember, smoke particles are extremely small and can travel deep into the lungs, even if the smoke doesn’t seem heavy.

If your horse develops difficulty breathing or their respiratory signs worsen, contact your veterinarian right away. Early intervention can help prevent more serious complications.

Stay safe, and don’t forget to check the air quality before heading out for a ride! 🩵🐴

Alonna cares deeply about every client and every animal we care for. She’s always ready to jump in, lend a hand, and make sure your animals receive the best care possible.

And let’s be honest… she can put on a NICE bandage. 😏 If you know, you know!

🎆🇺🇸 Fireworks are exciting for us—but they can be stressful and even dangerous for horses and livestock. 🐴🐄🐑

With Independence Day approaching, take a few extra steps to help keep your animals safe and comfortable.

Here are some tips from Creek Valley Veterinary Services:

🐴 Check fences, gates, and latches before the holiday.
🌾 Provide plenty of hay to keep horses occupied. Chewing can be calming and helps distract them from the noise.
🏡 Keep horses and livestock in a familiar pasture, paddock, or barn where they feel most secure.
📻 Turn on the barn radio or a fan to help mask the sound of fireworks.
🚜 Remove equipment or other hazards they could injure themselves on if they become frightened.
💧 Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
🚫 Avoid hauling horses or livestock during peak fireworks hours if possible.
👀 Check all animals after the fireworks have ended for injuries or damaged fencing.

💊 If your horse has a history of severe anxiety during fireworks, don’t wait until the last minute. Talk with your veterinarian ahead of time about whether sedation is appropriate. Sedatives are most effective when planned in advance, and your veterinarian can help determine the safest option for your horse.

Even the calmest animals can react unpredictably to loud noises and flashing lights. A little preparation can go a long way in preventing injuries and keeping everyone safe.

🚨 Producer Alert: New World Screwworm Confirmed in Texas Calf 🚨

A recent case of New World Screwworm has been confirmed in a calf in Texas. While this detection occurred far from Ohio, it serves as an important reminder for livestock owners to stay informed and remain vigilant.

New World Screwworm can affect cattle, horses, sheep, goats, swine, pets, wildlife, and even people. Unlike common maggots, which typically feed on dead or decaying tissue, New World Screwworm larvae feed on healthy, living tissue, causing wounds to become larger and more severe over time.

🔍 Watch for:
• Wounds that are not healing
• Foul-smelling wounds
• Excessive swelling or irritation
• Bloody discharge from a wound
• Visible maggots in wounds
• Animals repeatedly licking, biting, or rubbing an affected area

✅ Regularly inspect animals for injuries and treat wounds promptly.
✅ Pay close attention to newborn navels, surgical sites, dehorning or castration wounds, and any cuts or abrasions.
✅ Maintain good fly control practices.
✅ Contact your veterinarian if you notice unusual wound infestations.

While New World Screwworm is not currently present in Ohio, awareness and early detection are key to protecting animal health. Creek Valley Veterinary Services will continue to monitor developments and share important updates with our producers and horse owners.
