Well, this chonk is going to cost us more than just the expected dental price, as he has some other serious medical concerns ☹️ during his exam today, they noticed he had a grade 4 heart murmur & they were able to do an echocardiogram on the spot (for only $180 btw! Unheard of, in my opinion! We’ve never paid under $1000 for one). They wanted to do the echo today 1) because of the murmur but also 2) because they wanted to see if it was safe to continue with his steroid course for his ears. It turns out he has HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). Given that, he cannot be on steroids any further and we will be exploring medication management once his surgery is completed.
His ears are also just REALLY, REALLY bad — completely filled with pus and blood. His left ear is worse, but they’re sending out a culture for both ears. We also sent out a senior bloodwork panel just to get a baseline on him & also to make sure it’s safe to put him under anesthesia/adjust anesthesia protocols if needed. We’ll get the results for that by Monday. His teeth are bad — he’s missing a bunch, he has a fractured canine, and he’s just a hot mess in there (and all around lol).
If all goes well with bloodwork and we can move forward with surgery, they will fully clean out his ears while he’s under as well so we can treat more thoroughly — he is so blocked in his ears because of the infections, so it’s kind of impossible to fully treat it as is.
Because his teeth are so bad, we are thankfully able to schedule his surgery sooner than they normally would - it’ll be within the next 2 weeks. His invoice for today is attached, and I will post his surgery estimate next week once they call me to confirm.
