Freedom Ride for a Spiny‑Tailed Superstar 🦎

Our new Black Spiny‑tailed Iguana (Ctenosaura similis) is officially on his freedom ride home from the expo! We picked him up from a reputable breeder, and he’s already showing off that classic spiny‑tail attitude — alert, curious, and ready to explore his new world.

To help others learn about this amazing species, here are some important care basics for anyone considering a Ctenosaura:

• Large Enclosure — These iguanas are fast, active climbers. Adults need a spacious setup with strong branches, rock ledges, and plenty of vertical room.

• High Heat & UVB — They thrive with a hot basking spot and strong UVB to support bone health and proper digestion.

• Omnivore Diet — Offer a mix of greens, veggies,and occasional fruits. Variety keeps them healthy and engaged.

• Secure Hides — Even bold iguanas need places to retreat and feel safe.

• Strong Substrate — They love to dig

• Respect Their Speed — Spiny‑tails are incredibly quick. Gentle, patient handling helps build trust without stressing them.

🧡 Rescue Update!
This tiny African dormouse (often called a “micro squirrel”) gave us a little scare earlier this week. These small mammals have very fast metabolisms, which means even a brief drop in warmth or hydration can hit them hard.

With some supportive care, he bounced back exactly the way dormice do — by turning into a full‑speed nocturnal tornado. He spent the entire night running laps on his wheel like he was training for the Rodent Olympics.

We love seeing him back to his zoomy, chaotic self. Moments like this remind us how quickly these little guys can recover with proper care, patience, and attention to their unique needs.

⚠️ Safety Reminder for All Pet Owners:
Please remember that smoking anything — especially THC — near your pets is dangerous, and this is even more true for exotic rodents. Their respiratory systems are extremely sensitive, and exposure to smoke or v***r can cause:

• breathing issues
• neurological symptoms
• stress responses
• long‑term organ damage

Even “secondhand” smoke can harm them. Always keep smoking and va**ng far away from your animals’ enclosures and living spaces. Their lungs are tiny, and they can’t escape the environment you create.

Well it’s time for an update on our little rehab guest. NO MORE BANDAGES!!! This girl has healed amazingly. She has been moved from the hospital enclosure to the recovery pen. If all goes according to plan she will be released in her original “found location” following testing for diseases. Her shell has rebounded perfectly, it’s bitter sweet to see them ready to go.

UPDATE: our little rehab guest is showing very good spirits despite her injuries. The shell was able to be formed back with minimal work. She is eating and drinking water so it’s looking like we just have to wait for the shell to bind! Lots of energy and very curious (except when the cameras out!). Very excited to watch her recovery and we will keep you updated!

(The medical tape is low tack, only being used to stabilize fragments and to keep antibiotic cream in place, DO NOT attempt to help an injured turtle with household tapes)

Meet “Father Time” our resident coastal carpet python. Father came to us by chance after a hard life of mistreatment and has definitely started to open up as a friendly fella.

Carpet pythons are primarily an Australian species that grow to around 6.5-12 feet. They are semi arboreal and spend a lot of time perched just above the ground waiting for the right prey. Commonly found in the pet trade across a variety of subspecies and color morphs, they can make a great addition to any reptile room with their vibrant patterns and curious attitudes.
