Wellness is important. Actually making the appointments? That’s where things get complicated. Between work, riding, horse care, lessons, shows, family, and everything else on your plate, those appointments you’ve been meaning to schedule can easily keep getting pushed back.

So we’re bringing them to you.

The Wellness Collective brings trusted equine and rider wellness practitioners together at your barn, making it easier to prioritize wellness for 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧.

Think of it less like an event and more like your farrier coming to the barn: you choose the services you want, reserve your appointment, and the practitioners come to you.

The Collective may include services such as:
• Equine bodywork & massage
• Equine cupping
• Shockwave therapy with veterinary permission
• PEMF
• Rider massage & stretching
• Rider biomechanics & physical training
• And other complementary wellness services

Each Collective is built around the needs of the individual barn community, with practitioners selected specifically for that location.

𝐖𝐇𝐘 𝐃𝐎𝐄𝐒 𝐒𝐇𝐎𝐂𝐊𝐖𝐀𝐕𝐄 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐀 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐔𝐈𝐓?

It comes down to acoustics.

Radial shockwave therapy uses mechanical pressure waves to deliver acoustic energy into the body. For that energy to transfer efficiently from the applicator into the horse’s tissues, we need to create a continuous acoustic pathway between the treatment head and the skin. And there’s one major problem standing in the way: Air.

Air has dramatically different acoustic properties than skin and soft tissue. When a shockwave encounters an air pocket, much of that acoustic energy is reflected rather than transmitted into the tissue. Even tiny air pockets can interfere with effective energy transmission.

That’s why we use a conduit (coupling medium). The conduit fills the microscopic spaces between the applicator and the horse’s skin, eliminating air gaps and allowing the acoustic wave to move from the applicator → through the conduit → into the tissue.

There are several products that can be used for this purpose (including ultrasound gel), but castor oil is my favorite. Castor oil isn't just helping me establish good acoustic coupling—it also provides a nice topical oil for the horse’s skin during the session.

My go-to? Pretty Farm Girl. Their organic castor oil is cold-pressed and hexane-free, giving me a simple, quality product to keep in my shockwave kit. So yes, that bottle of oil has an important job. It isn't just making the applicator glide. 😉

Let’s take a closer look at the muscles behind your horse’s movement. What they do, why they get tight, and how cupping may help. We're continuing with muscles in the neck.

𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴?
Equine cupping, also called myofascial decompression, uses suction to gently lift the skin and underlying tissues. This creates a lifting effect on the fascia and soft tissues, which can help increase local blood flow, support lymphatic drainage, and improve the movement of tissues that feel tight or restricted.

The 𝑺𝒑𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒖𝒔 𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒄𝒍𝒆 is divided into two parts: the splenius capitis and the splenius cervicis. The splenius plays a crucial role in maintaining posture and facilitating movement. By its action of elevating the head and neck, it facilitates the forward movement of the forelimb as well as allows the neck to bend and the head to turn.

Tension in this muscle is commonly caused by:
▪️Training and riding influences like forced frames and hyperflexion
▪️Compensation from lameness in a forelimb or dental/TMJ pain
▪️Setback and tie-up accidents causing a whiplash effect
▪️Poor saddle fit

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸?
Your horse may exhibit one or more of these signs:
▪️Trouble bending side to side, which can also look like one side is harder to bend than the other
▪️Bracing against you in the contact
▪️Sensitive to mane pulling
▪️Overdeveloped on the underside of the neck (aka swan neck)
▪️Pain at the base of the neck

If this sounds like your horse, it may be time to give this area some extra attention. Give us a call or send us a message, and let's talk about how cupping may be a helpful addition to their wellness routine.

A few memories from my last New Jersey Quarter Horse show of the season.

But while my NJQHA season is wrapping up, I know plenty of you aren't done yet! Congress is still ahead for many, and there are more miles, classes, and show days left to come.

So this isn't a season-ending post for you… just a little “that’s a wrap” for me.
