BEHIND THE LENS | The details make the difference.
One of the things I pay the most attention to during a photo session isn’t necessarily what’s directly in front of my camera.
It’s everything happening around it.
Backgrounds matter. Framing matters. The way your subject fits into the environment matters.
A distracting fence post, an awkward tree branch, or a poorly positioned background element can completely change the feel of a photograph.
But those same surroundings can also become some of your greatest creative tools.
I love using trees, open spaces, architectural elements, and even a horse’s neck or reins to naturally frame my subject.
Sometimes the most interesting composition is the one you discover when you stop photographing everything from the most obvious angle.
And the more intentional you are behind the camera, the less time you’ll spend correcting distractions in post-production.
Don’t just look at your subject. Look at the entire photograph.
