Cats aren’t just smaller, more independent dogs—they have their own behavioral, environmental, and medical needs. With extensive hands-on feline experience through veterinary care, animal sheltering, and my own cats, I’m comfortable caring for everyone from the outgoing lap cat to the shy kitty who would rather observe me from across the room.

I understand the importance of maintaining familiar routines, respecting boundaries, providing appropriate enrichment, and watching for the subtle changes in appetite, litter box habits, grooming, and behavior that can tell us when something isn’t quite right.

Did you know more pets go missing on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year? Loud noises and flashing lights can cause even normally calm pets to panic and run.

Before celebrating, take a few simple precautions:

🏷️ Make sure ID tags and microchip information are up to date
🎶 Create a quiet, comfortable space away from the noise
📸 Have a recent photo of your pet, just in case

How to Introduce a Shy Dog to a New Sitter Safely💕

Not all dogs greet new people with tail wags—and that’s okay. Shy or sensitive dogs need a slower, more thoughtful introduction to feel safe and confident.

Here are a few ways to set them up for success:

🐾 Start with a meet-and-greet
Allow your dog to observe the sitter from a comfortable distance. No pressure, no rushing.

🐾 Let your dog make the first move
Avoid forcing interaction. Curiosity builds confidence.

🐾 Keep the environment calm
Limit noise, visitors, and excitement during the first visit.

☀️ Heat Safety for Dogs and Cats

As temperatures climb into the 90s, heat can become dangerous for pets much faster than many people realize. Dogs and cats cannot cool themselves the same way we do, and heat-related illness can develop quickly — even during short periods outdoors.

Here are a few important reminders to help keep pets safe during hot weather:

• Limit outdoor activity during peak heat
Early morning and evening are the safest times for walks or outdoor time.

• Check pavement temperature
If the ground is too hot for your hand after a few seconds, it’s too hot for paws.

• Provide constant access to fresh water and shade
Hydration is critical, especially for senior pets, brachycephalic breeds (those with short noses), and pets with medical conditions.

• Never leave pets in a parked vehicle
Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.

• Watch for signs of heat stress
These may include:
• Excessive panting
• Lethargy or weakness
• Drooling
• Vomiting
• Unsteadiness or collapse

If you suspect heat exhaustion or heat stroke, seek veterinary care immediately.

As a pet care provider, I adjust visit schedules and outdoor time during extreme heat to keep pets safe and comfortable. Safety always comes first.
