🐴 FROM THE NECK… THROUGH THE SHOULDER… INTO EVERY STRIDE

A horse’s neck does far more than hold up their head. The muscles of the neck play an important role in flexion, turning, balance, posture, and how freely the horse can use the shoulders and front end.

Think about what happens when you wake up with a tight or sore neck. You may be able to turn your head, but you compensate—you turn your shoulders or entire upper body instead. You may hold one shoulder differently, feel restricted reaching with an arm, or even change the way you carry yourself to avoid the tight area.

A horse can compensate in similar ways.

When the muscles through the neck are tight, sore, or fatigued, a horse may have difficulty comfortably bending and flexing through the neck. That restriction can carry into the base of the neck and shoulder region, affecting how freely the shoulder moves and how comfortably the horse reaches forward with the front limbs. The horse may begin altering posture or movement to compensate, which can place additional demand on other muscle groups.

❄️ This is where cryotherapy can be a valuable part of muscle recovery and maintenance.

In this mare, we're using targeted CO₂ cryotherapy over the muscular areas of the neck. The rapid cooling creates a strong physiological response that can help with temporary pain relief, reduction of localized inflammation, and recovery following muscular stress or strenuous work.

Our goal isn't simply to treat where a horse appears sore. It's to consider how that area influences the entire chain of movement.

A more comfortable neck can mean easier flexion and turning, better freedom through the shoulder, and a horse that is better able to use its body naturally instead of compensating for muscular discomfort.

Because sometimes what you're seeing in the stride may start much farther up the body than you think. 🐴❄️

🐎❄️ PERFORMANCE THERAPY — RECOVERY IS PART OF THE PROGRAM ❄️🐎

This barrel horse just finished a full weekend of competition, and her owner chose cryotherapy as preventative maintenance to support her recovery and help keep her feeling her best for the next event.

So what is she experiencing during this session?

As our CO₂ cryotherapy is applied, she feels an intense but controlled cooling sensation over the treatment area. The rapid cooling causes temporary vasoconstriction, narrowing the local blood vessels and decreasing blood flow to the area during application. This cooling response can help manage the normal inflammatory response, swelling, and soreness that may follow strenuous athletic activity.

Once the application ends and the tissues begin returning toward their normal temperature, blood flow increases again. This cooling-and-rewarming response can support circulation and recovery following demanding exercise.

Think about what a barrel horse’s body does throughout a competition weekend—acceleration, hard turns, collection, stopping, pushing off, and repeated muscular effort. Even when there is no injury, those demands can leave muscles and soft tissues fatigued and sore.

That’s why performance therapy isn’t only about treating an injury after it happens. Preventative maintenance and recovery are important parts of caring for an equine athlete.

This mare isn’t being treated because something is wrong. Her owner is being proactive about helping her recover from this weekend so she can continue doing what she loves and be ready for the next one. 💪🐴❤️

✨ How Can BEMER Therapy Help Your Horse? ✨

Whether your horse is a top competitor, a weekend trail partner, or enjoying retirement, healthy circulation is essential for overall wellness.

🐴 BEMER therapy works by supporting the body's natural microcirculation, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues while assisting with the removal of metabolic waste.

Some potential benefits include:
✔️ Improved circulation
✔️ Faster muscle recovery after exercise
✔️ Reduced stiffness and soreness
✔️ Support for healthy joints and muscles
✔️ Enhanced relaxation
✔️ A great addition to your horse's regular wellness routine

Many horses become so relaxed during a BEMER session that they lower their heads, yawn, or even fall asleep! 😴

At Revital Equine, we bring BEMER therapy directly to your barn, making it easy to help your horse feel and perform at its best.

📲 Call or text 412-491-2413 to schedule your horse's BEMER session today!

🧊 Let's Talk Cryotherapy & Tendons

Tendons are designed to withstand incredible amounts of force, but because they have a limited blood supply, they can be some of the slowest structures in the body to heal. Whether your horse is dealing with a tendon injury or you're simply trying to keep an equine athlete performing at its best, cryotherapy can be a valuable part of the recovery and maintenance process.

Cryotherapy rapidly lowers the temperature of the affected tissue, helping to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain. Unlike traditional icing, targeted cryotherapy can pe*****te several inches beneath the surface, allowing it to reach deeper tissues where many tendon injuries occur.

Benefits of Cryotherapy for Tendons:

✔️ Helps reduce inflammation before it causes additional tissue damage

✔️ Decreases swelling and discomfort

✔️ Supports healthy circulation after
treatment, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the healing tissue

✔️ May help reduce secondary tissue damage in the early stages of an injury

✔️ Encourages a faster, more comfortable recovery when combined with an appropriate veterinary treatment plan and rehabilitation program

Cryotherapy isn't just for injured horses. Many performance horses benefit from treatments after training, competitions, or strenuous work to help manage inflammation before it becomes a problem.

Healthy tendons are essential for soundness, longevity, and peak performance. Taking care of them today can help keep your horse performing tomorrow.

🧊Let's Talk Cellulitis & Cryotherapy🧊

Cellulitis is a painful bacterial infection of the deeper layers of the skin and underlying tissues that causes a horse's leg to become hot, swollen, tight, and extremely sore. Without prompt treatment, it can progress quickly.

While cryotherapy is not a cure for cellulitis and does not replace antibiotics or veterinary care, it can be a valuable supportive therapy. Research has shown that cryotherapy can help slow bacterial growth, making it beneficial when treating bacterial infections that contribute to cellulitis, while also reducing the body's inflammatory response.

❄️ Cryotherapy helps by:
• Helping slow bacterial growth associated with cellulitis
• Rapidly reducing inflammation • Decreasing pain and discomfort
• Helping minimize excessive swelling
• Encouraging lymphatic drainage
• Improving your horse's comfort, making movement easier and supporting circulation

Unlike traditional icing, cryotherapy can pe*****te 4–6 inches into the tissues, allowing it to target deeper inflammation while cooling the surface at the same time.

If your horse develops sudden swelling, heat, or pain in a leg, contact your veterinarian immediately. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential. Once your veterinarian has established a treatment plan, cryotherapy can be an excellent addition to support recovery, improve comfort, and help your horse get back to feeling its best 🐴
