Taylor Co SPCA The Taylor Co SPCA is a 501(c)(3) foster-based animal rescue in Central Kentucky. We also provide support to the community via our low-cost spay/neuter program.

We are run entirely by volunteers who dedicate their time to helping animals in need. We help animals in many different counties.

We're in the thick of kitten season, so now is a good time to remind folks that young kittens need their moms!!

If you find a kitten 🐱 (or a litter of kittens) outdoors, what do you do? Help us help them!

In a nutshell, a young kitten's best chance of survival is with their mom. If you find kittens, your first step is to OBSERVE. Are the kittens injured or critically sick or do they appear healthy?

If they are sick or injured, please reach out to your local shelter and rescue for guidance, or take to a vet or emergency clinic for urgent care.

If the babies are healthy, keep an eye out for mom. The mom will leave the babies while she's out and about, so please don't assume that the kittens have no mom just because you don't see her. She might be hiding if she knows you're nearby.

If no mom appears after several hours, contact a rescue or shelter.

✨✨It might be helpful to place a ring of flour around the kittens to see if mom's footprints later appear.

🐈‍⬛🐈We know it's hard to leave kittens outside where you found them, but if the kittens are still nursing from mom, and mom is still around to provide care, that's their best situation for now.

Did you know that approximately 80% of kittens born outdoors die before they are six months old? That up to half a million cats and kittens are euthanized in shelters each year? That female kittens can become pregnant as young as 4 months old? That a single unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce hundreds of kittens over several years?

These are the statistics that keep us up at night.

The amount of suffering and overpopulation in our communities is staggering, and it can feel impossible to make a difference. But if we are serious about reducing the number of homeless cats, kittens entering shelters/rescues, and animals suffering on the streets, we have to address the root of the problem.

And to be clear: shelters that are forced to euthanize for space are not the problem. Open-intake shelters cannot simply say no when animals arrive at their doors. The problem is that far more kittens are being born than there are homes available for them.

We cannot adopt our way out of this crisis.

SPAY AND NEUTER IS THE SOLUTION!

If you've ever noticed a cat you feed has shown up with a small straight-cut portion missing from the tip of one ear, this means this cat has been altered and vaccinated through a TNR (trap-neuter-return) program. The procedure does not hurt the cat, and the ear tip helps volunteers avoid trapping the same cat again.

This ear tip represents progress! It represents a cat who will never produce another litter of kittens destined to struggle outdoors or enter an already overwhelmed shelter system. It represents a male cat who will not feel compelled to roam or fight with other cats. Every ear-tipped cat you see represents a cycle that has been broken.

Every ear tip took time.

Every ear tip took money.

Every ear tip took compassion.

Two of our volunteers have been performing TNR on their own time and at their own expense. Cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, ear tipped for identification, and returned to the outdoor home they know, where caretakers continue to provide food.

However, two volunteers cannot solve a community-wide problem alone.

If you are giving away kittens, please make plans to have the mother cat spayed. If you find kittens outdoors, remember that there is almost always a mother cat nearby who has been caring for them. If you feed community cats, get them fixed. If you cannot trap or transport, offer to help someone who can. If you are able, donate to local spay/neuter and TNR efforts. There are dozens of low-cost options all around the state.

While the problem seems insurmountable, there is a proven solution. Please spay and neuter, and be part of that solution.

Every cat fixed today can prevent suffering tomorrow.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, it’s kitten season! While there are quite literally hundreds of kittens competing for homes, rescue, and shelter space, don’t forget about the adult cats and older kittens if you’ve been considering adding some love to your family.

Kittens are downright adorable, but they can also be downright chaotic! Adult cats can still be playful and entertaining, but they also (usually!) know when it’s time to settle down. Best of all, they’ve already settled into their personalities, which means we can help match you with the perfect companion.

🚨🚨 “BOBCAT FEVER” an often fatal tick borne disease in cats, is on the rise in KY. 🚨🚨

The name comes from the fact that bobcats are the natural host, they usually carry it without getting very sick, but when the parasite is passed to domestic cats through tick bites, it can be devastating.

🐱What it does to cats

Once a cat is infected, the parasite multiplies quickly in the bloodstream and can cause:

* High fever
* Extreme tiredness (lethargy)
* Not eating
* Pale gums / anemia
* Breathing trouble or collapse in severe cases

It progresses fast, some cats get very sick within days of showing symptoms.

🐱Is it affecting regular (domestic) cats?

Yes. This is the important part:

* It primarily affects domestic cats, especially those exposed to ticks outdoors.
* It is not limited to wild or “bobcat” cats.
* INDOOR cats are much lower risk, but still not zero risk if:
* ticks get brought inside on dogs, people, or other animals
* they escape outdoors or live in high-tick areas

So “regular cats” absolutely can and do get it.

🐱Where it’s most common

It’s seen most often in the southeastern and south-central U.S., where the Lone Star tick is common, but cases have been expanding into other regions too.

🐱The bottom line

* It’s rare but very serious
* It’s not contagious between cats
* It’s preventable with good tick control and limiting outdoor exposure
* Fast vet treatment can save some cats, but it’s still a medical emergency

‼️ Vets are actively warning about it right now, especially in parts of the U.S. where ticks are common.

💉 What the current vet warning actually is..2026

Veterinarians and animal health groups have been flagging “bobcat fever” (cytauxzoonosis) more in recent years because:

* More cases are being diagnosed in domestic cats
* It’s showing up in new areas farther north than before
* It can kill cats very quickly (sometimes within days of symptoms)
* It’s often mistaken at first for a “regular illness” until it’s severe

👂 Why you’re hearing about it more now

This isn’t a new disease, but vets are sounding louder alarms because:

* Tick populations (especially Lone Star ticks) are expanding
* Outdoor and indoor/outdoor cats are getting exposed more often
* Better testing (PCR blood tests) means it’s being confirmed more frequently
* Some regions (like the Southeast and Midwest) are seeing more documented clusters and cases

💉 What vets are telling cat owners

Across vet clinics, the consistent warning is:

* “Use year round tick prevention”
* “Indoor cats are safest”
* “Treat any sudden fever or lethargy as an emergency”
* “Don’t wait, this disease moves fast”

✅Important reality check

Even though it sounds scary (and it is serious), vets are also clear about this:

🚨WE NEED HELP!🚨 Can you foster?

The hits just keep coming, and if your feeds are anything like ours, you are seeing endless kittens in need. Well, here are a few more, and we are begging for help. These kittens, and many more like them, need a safe place to land.

If you have a spare bathroom, bedroom, basement, or even just a corner of your home, you can foster.* We cover all vetting and can also cover necessities like food and litter.

Our current fosters have their own pets, families, and jobs. They are ordinary people who simply made room to help. But the same people cannot keep stepping up over and over again. Their homes are full, and they are exhausted. We desperately need more fosters.

If you cannot foster, please consider other ways you can help:

-Donate
-Spay and neuter everything, even if they aren’t “yours”
-Adopt
-Educate your friends, family, and neighbors

Like many rescues, we are seriously drowning. There is not enough space, not enough money, and not enough help to keep up with the number of kittens being born right now. We are incredibly lucky to have generous vetting partners, but this is not sustainable.

Please. Even if you cannot foster, do something. These animals need all of us.

-We ask that foster families commit to animals until adoption

This goofy little beagle boy believes every activity should include him somehow - whether it's naps in the sun, hanging with his doggy friends, or dramatically appearing the second he hears a treat bag crinkle from three rooms away. 🫣😝

Maximus is food motivated in the strongest possible sense... honestly, it loving snacks was an Olympic sport, he'd have gold medals. He'll even walk on his back legs for treats like the tiny circus performer he believes he is. Equal parts lazy, loving, silly, and affectionate, Maximus is just a happy little guy looking for his person to share snacks, belly rubs, adventures, and approximately 14 naps a day with. 🤡 💚😴

🆘‼️FOSTER NEEDED ASAP‼️🆘
This little girl had a rough start to life when she was found as a small puppy abandoned on the side of the road. 😓 Poppy came into our rescue and was adopted after her vetting was complete and she was ready to find her furever family; but due to unforeseen circumstances and NO fault of her own, the family is no longer able to care for Poppy 💔 so this precious girl is back to us.

Poppy is with a wonderful temporary foster mom, but Poppy DESPERATELY needs a foster who has other doggies and a space to where she can run and regain her confidence. She loves her foster mom, but isn’t thriving bc there are no other dogs in the home and the temporary foster doesn’t have a yard. 😔

🩷 SAVE A LIFE TODAY 🩷 by opening your heart and home to give this sweet girl and giving her a safe and loving place to decompress and learn “how to dog” again!! Poppy just wants to be loved!! 🥺

Sweet Rya was returned recently due to absolutely no fault of her own! She is back looking for her forever home. She is truly sunshine embodied ☀️

Rya is extra special as she is a tripod! She had an old injury when she came into care, and for Rya’s quality of life, it was best to amputate. This does not slow her down one bit and she still loves to run and play outside.

Rya has the sweetest disposition and does great with all people, including kids. She also does great with other dogs.
