People assume grooming is “running clippers over a dog”, truly it isn’t that simple. Clipping sets the length, but ALL of my haircut dogs get some degree of hand-scissoring. Some more than others! 😉 Certain textures of coats show *every. little. mark* and require more finessing. Here is a doodle with a soft, dense coat: before (clippers only) and after a scissor-over-comb technique. This is my favorite part of the groom and where it starts to come together — I could finesse forever, but have to stop myself to maintain a reasonable amount of time. 😆

Unpopular opinion in the dog grooming industry… 👀

A slightly imperfect groom on a nervous dog will always mean more to us than a perfect groom that pushed them too far.

Not every dog is going to stand perfectly, hold still for every part of the groom or leave looking like they’ve stepped straight out of a breed-standard competition.

And that’s okay.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is adapt. Take a break. Change the plan. Leave something a little longer. Accept that today’s groom might not be “perfect”.

Because grooming should be about more than the finished haircut.

It’s about building trust, keeping the experience as positive as possible and making sure your dog feels safe enough to come back next time. 🐾

Perfect hair isn’t worth a frightened dog. 💜
