A flirt pole is an excellent way to provide exercise that engages parts of the predatory motor sequence that we can simulate through play. I think it’s important to let them have the toy on the flirt pole or to throw them a toy so they can complete the behavior and “get” the item. If your dog tends to end an exercise session more pumped up than they started, you can slow the game down by barely tugging on the toy before giving them the toy lazily. If that isn’t enough, your dog may need to do a little sniffing, licking or chewing to cool off.

Activity routines help your dogs meet their natural needs. Enriching their lives helps them feel better and that helps them behave better. It’s not so much “a tired dog is a good dog” as “a dog whose needs have been met is a good dog.” Setting ourselves up for success is most of the battle.
