People see the cute puppy pictures and think “I want to breed my dog just once so our family can have one of her puppies.” I understand loving your dog that much. But please understand what you could be signing up for. Behind those pictures are endless hours of care, sleepless nights, unexpected expenses and some really scary moments.
Sunday, Mocha was struggling to go potty and strained so hard that she vomited. At yesterday’s vet appointment, she was lethargic and clearly wasn’t feeling well. We held off on her vaccines and I opted for subcutaneous fluids and an antibiotic in case she aspirated so we wouldn’t have to worry about aspiration pneumonia, with plans to do her vaccines next week once she was feeling better.
She came home acting more like herself. Then early morning, she vomited again after I supplemented her and had a hypoglycemic episode. Thankfully, we had the proper supplies on hand to help her until we could get her safely back to the vet this morning. Even when you’re prepared it’s scary watching a little one struggle.
Miss Mocha received anti-nausea medication and more fluids today and is thankfully doing much better! Please keep our sweet girl in your prayers as she gets back to feeling 100% 🤍
I’m sharing this because these moments are part of breeding too. You have to be ready to recognize when something is wrong, respond quickly, rearrange your day, lose sleep and cover whatever care they need. Loving your dog and wanting to “duplicate” them doesn’t prepare you for all of that and a puppy is never guaranteed to be a copy of the dog you love.
And just to put the financial side into perspective: yesterday’s vet bill was $700 followed by another $250 today 😉
Please, please consider the difficult parts before deciding to breed “just one time.” These little lives depend on you being ready for more than the cute moments! Pic for attention but we are definitely soaking in all these snuggles 🤍
