Dreamin’ of fall.

I don’t teach my dog a lot of commands for the field, but I don’t want her running amok either. I know a lot of folks think, “they’re just dachshunds, pick them up when they’re being naughty/when they’ve done their job, etc.” But it’s not always that easy. And there’s nothing more like nails on a chalkboard to me than a hunter *screaming* at their dog to listen repeatedly in the field and the chaos that ensues when they don’t.
The main words I use with Norah are: “wait” which she takes pretty seriously and we’ve been using that for mealtime also, “here” (some people say “come” whatever floats your boat) “check this” or “check it” for a brushy spot I want her to get into which also helps during barn hunt-type events, “get down there” because we often hunt in areas that are on a berm and she needs to go down while I stay up, and not pictured is “leave it” which is, I feel, one of the more important commands I give her when we’re out. She’s still a work in progress but every season she gets better and we practise at it during the off season to fine tune things without the added pressure of the hunt.

I haven’t been active much because my arm is a busted can of biscuits 😣 In the meantime while I heal up, we’ve been doing obedience work for the field and I’ve been getting everything ready for my new-to-me kayak. I named it ‘Norah the Explorah’ in honour of my best paddling buddy. I can’t wait to get out with her and have so many adventures!

Building rabbit habitat is easy to do and so rewarding. You can create it on your own property and turn a 2 acre postage stamp lot into a bunny haven, and you can also work at it in the off season of hunting in your permissions. It only takes a few minutes to build a desirable home for cottontails and other vulnerable species. In addition to brush piles, we’ve let the understory grow that we used to cut down and we’re growing out the paddock with meadow grasses. In a region such as ours that is over-tilled with little tree coverage, every bit for wildlife helps.

Going…going…gone! Dachshunds/teckels were bred to go to ground, and they couldn’t have been designed more perfectly for the job! From their broad front feet well adapted for digging, their prominent keel to act as a shield while doing so, with the same deep prow that allows for large lungs to take in more air whilst underground paired along with a streamlined body suited for tunnelling through dirt (or snow!), these hounds were made for following any prey animal that went down into the earth such as badgers, fox, rabbit or in this case, squirrel.

Today at the NASDA trial hosted by TBASCO, Norah qualified in all three of her Level II Urban Locate runs, and earned High In Class for 2/3 runs! She finished one in 1.46 seconds! She had a lot of fun searching for rats, (even though I lied and told her they were squirrels 👀) and we’ll see what tomorrow brings!
