When I reference a “dynamic heel” I’m talking about a very specific loose leash walk that I aim towards for service dogs. This includes minimal feedback from the handler and maximum performance from the dog. Ideally, the handler will give the cue to heel once, and then the dog will stick by the handlers leg and move fluidly as the handler moves back and forth or side to side, staying parallel to their handler.
This is an important skill I teach all of my service dog clients because it is a key point in having your service dog move as an extension of yourself.
This skill is useful especially while handlers may be shopping, moving down aisles, or being in crowded areas where they may have to adjust their position in a crowd frequently.
This is also a helpful prerequisite for mobility dogs who need to have an even higher understanding of where their body is in the space they’re in at all times!
