September is National Service Dog Month and I want to take the time to honor my clients, the owner trainers of the service dog world.

To take on the challenge of training your own disability aid is a huge feat, and one that is often dismissed as just β€œplaying with a dog all day.”

To not just my clients, but all owner trainers: I see you. I see the sacrifices you make, both to your health and for the betterment of your prospects, all in the gamble that one day they may improve your quality of life.

Owner training is a huge gamble, even if you do everything right to set yourself up for success, the outcome is never guaranteed.

So let’s take the time this month to remember our owner trainer friends and offer them support however we can.

You got this 🫢🏻

BAK Forty’s Everything Is Awesome, β€œEmmett” @ 15 months old

Emmett is here for a long term board and train, prepping him for both college life and flying with his handler, which he will do frequently for holidays and breaks from school. Yesterday Emmett and I did BNA’s TSA Day Pass, which gives you the ability to go through TSA and enjoy the amenities beyond security without requiring a boarding pass.

Almost four months ago, when Emmett and his handler, Ansley, started working with me, Emmett wasn’t doing any sort of public access. He struggled with staying engaged with Ansley, settling outside of his crate, and walking on a loose leash. This was shocking to me, knowing that Emmett is a well bred Labrador who was temperament tested for service work.

After introducing clearer marker words, conditioning pattern games, and making sure Emmett’s biological needs were always fulfilled before starting sessions (instead of withholding access until he engaged with us), Emmett has truly made a complete 180.

He happily engaged with me the entire time we navigated the airport, ignored millions of distractions like people touching him, dogs barking at him, and suitcases banging around, AND he did all of this with a loose leash.

And the best part? I didn’t do this. Emmett has only stayed with me for three weeks of his entire life. His transformation is credited to Ansley, who put in the hard work under my guidance to build Emmett to where he is today. Ansley needed a service dog, Emmett is the perfect dog for the job, they just needed to bridge the gap with guidance from a professional.

As Ansley preps to start their fall semester of college, Emmett is busy with school of his own with me. These next few months are going to be filled with prepping for dining halls, classes, and busy campus life.

I’m so, so proud of Emmett and all the hard work Ansley has put in to him so far. They’re a fantastic team 🫢🏻

Mister Emmett is back at the lab house!

Emmett stayed with me at the beginning of the summer while his handler was on vacation for a short stay! We made a lot of progress in that time and now he’s back to make more!

Emmett will be here for a little under four months working primarily on public access skills to prep him for attending college with his handler! We also have a goal of flying home at the end of the stay, so we’re going to be working hard on plane prep as well. Task work is also going to touched on, but without as big of a focus.

I’m very excited to have Emmett back! He’s lovely to have in the house and gets along so well with Winnie and Figment. His handler has also been going above and beyond with upkeeping his training, he has improved so much since he was with me in June!

Everyone welcome Koa to the Cosmic Crew! He had his in person evaluation for service work this evening and passed with flying colors 🌈

His mom has worked so hard on his obedience and neutrality as a pet dog, so now we can move on to the fun stuff like task work and public access behaviors for his journey as a service dog! Very excited to see this boy develop over the next few months πŸ˜‹
