What started as a group of doodles running through town turned into one of the best examples of community collaboration we’ve seen in a long time.
In Huachuca City, where one Animal Control Officer covers the community, repeated calls about loose dogs quickly became a team effort. The Cochise County - Government sherrif departments ACOs stepped in to help safely catch and return the dogs home. After multiple calls, everyone realized this wasn’t just an animal issue, it was a family that needed support.
The Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center immediately stepped up and took in five of the doodles. Two of the adults were spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and reunited with the senior caregiver they already knew and loved. The remaining three will now have the chance to find wonderful homes through their facility.
We committed to helping the owner with the other five doodles and learned there was more happening behind the scenes for their owner. Her church stepped in to help catch up her electric bill, and we contacted the gas company regarding needed repairs because no senior should face Arizona summer temps without safe utilities.
Donna at 4 Paws Grooming Salon donated grooming services for three of the dogs, removing months of matting and helping them feel comfortable in their skin again. Community volunteers jumped in to transport dogs to and from appointments when we posted for help.
Scarritt Foundation partnered with ASAVET Veterinary Charities to provide spay/neuter surgeries and vaccines for the remaining five doodles so that they could move toward healthy futures. Two volunteers met halfway to complete the 3 hour round trip drive required to get them all there.
Because so many people chose compassion over judgment, all TEN doodles are now safe, sterilized, vaccinated and moving toward brighter futures. Their caregiver chose to only keep the two dogs she felt most connected to, while the others will now have the opportunity to find loving homes through Little Lotus Rescue & Sanctuary.
This is what rescue can look like. Animal control officers, sheriff deputies, nonprofits, churches, veterinarians, businesses, and neighbors all showing up together because… It takes a village🏘️
