Awww....this is the stuff that melts our hearts. Be like this young man. Find ways to volunteer at your local shelter and animal rescue organizations.

An 11-year-old boy in Florida has spent 100 hours reading to pets at his local shelter. Nehemiah was determined to reach the goal shortly after he began volunteering with his grandmother two years ago. Learn more about this story at the link in comments.

Be kind to the furry residents in your neighborhood this July 4th. We love fireworks. Them? Not so much. Fireworks can stress them out.

We can't always control what our neighbors do with fireworks, but we can help reduce our pets' stress. Here are some ways you can help them cope:

- Bring them inside before fireworks start
- Close windows and curtains to muffle the sound and block flashing light
- Turn on a fan, the TV, or white noise machines to mask the booms
- Create a safe space for them (covered crate, closet or small room) with bedding, water and familiar toys where they can hide to feel safe
- Consider a weighted vest for dogs
- Don't try to force them out of hiding spots.

This Pittsburgh-area cat rescue does amazing work. We adopted one of our cats from them and support their efforts.

If you love cats and feel so inclined, please consider supporting them. Getting these cuties off the streets is only one part of the equation. Then the hard part - feeding, medical treatment - socializimg - begins. And please also consider adopting or fostering with them. They're always looking for foster families and those willing to adopt the cats they've rescued.
