⚠️ Yes… it’s alive! 🪱🔬

What you’re seeing here is a live heartworm microfilaria moving under the microscope.

Microfilariae are the microscopic offspring produced by adult heartworms living inside an infected animal. Mosquitoes can pick them up during a blood meal and later transmit heartworm infection to another pet.

Heartworm disease can cause serious, potentially life-threatening damage to the heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels, but it is preventable. ❤️

This tiny wiggle is a pretty big reminder: keep your pets on year-round heartworm prevention and stay up to date on their recommended testing!

📞 Give Countryside Veterinary Clinic a call if you have questions about heartworm testing or prevention.

🍊🐱 Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day! 🐱🍊

Today we’re celebrating the orange cats who bring a little extra sunshine, sass, and approximately 110% more chaos into our lives.

A few fun facts about our favorite little cheese puffs:

🧡 Most ginger cats are male! The orange-color gene is carried on the X chromosome, which makes orange males much more common than orange females.

🐯 Every orange cat is technically a tabby! Even the ones who look mostly solid have a tabby pattern hiding in that gorgeous ginger coat.

🖤 They can get freckles! Orange cats often develop harmless little black spots called lentigines on their noses, lips, and gums as they get older.

And of course, we had to show off some of our own Countryside orange kitties! These are some of our staff's orange fluffs, patiently waiting at home for their humans to finish taking care of YOUR orange cats. 🥹🧡

Drop a picture of your own orange menace... we mean, beloved ginger cat... in the comments so we can celebrate them too! 🍊🐾

🦟 Heartworm treatment requires more than just medication. It requires REST! 🦟

When a dog is diagnosed with heartworm disease, one of the most important parts of treatment is strict exercise restrictions.

Adult heartworms live in the heart and nearby blood vessels, where they can cause inflammation and damage. During treatment, especially as the worms being to die, physical activity can increase the risk of serious complications.

That means no running, rough housing, long walks or backyard zoomies. 🐕 Depending on you dog's activity level, crate or small-room confinement may be necessary throughout treatment.

The good news? Heartworm disease is PREVENTABLE! Keeping your dog in year-round heartworm prevention, such as Sentinel Spectrum, is much easier and safer than treating an established infection.

Have questions about heartworm testing or prevention? Give us a call and we'll be happy to help keep your pup protected! 🐾
