Puppy stage, around ten weeks old: handling and grooming tolerance. This is one of the quieter training skills, easy to skip in favor of sit and come, but it pays off for the entire life of the dog, because every vet visit, every nail trim, and every tick check goes smoother when a Labrador has learned early that hands on paws, ears, and mouth are nothing to worry about.

The easiest way to build this is in short, calm sessions completely separate from anything stressful. Gently hold a paw for two or three seconds, then release and offer a small treat, working up gradually to longer holds, a light touch inside the ear, and a quick look at the teeth. If the puppy pulls away, that is useful information, not something to push through, so back up to a shorter or gentler version and build slowly from there instead of holding on tighter.

Done consistently over a few weeks, this becomes second nature, and a grown Labrador who was handled this way as a puppy tends to be remarkably easy at the vet and the groomer for the rest of its life. For thirty-one years straight, one dog sat at the very top of America's most popular breed list. 🏆

From 1991 all the way through 2021, the Labrador retriever held the number one spot in American Kennel Club registrations. That is not a good run, that is a dynasty. An entire generation grew up never knowing a year when the Lab was not America's favorite dog.

Then in 2022 the streak finally ended, and the breed that dethroned it was the French Bulldog, a compact city companion suited to apartment life. It says something about how we live now, with more of us in smaller spaces. Yet the Labrador remains near the very top, still beloved for exactly the reasons that carried it there: that easygoing heart, the endless patience with kids, and a readiness for anything from a hunt to a nap.

Records end, but the reasons people fall for a Lab do not. 🖤
