I am honestly beyond upset after what I witnessed today. I saw a black dog sitting inside a black car in this heat, and the dog had already been in there for at least an hour. What made it even worse was that the dog barely looked alive. Seeing an animal sitting there helplessly in extreme heat is something I cannot just ignore or brush off. Dogs cannot open the door, turn on the air conditioning, or tell you when they are overheating. They are completely dependent on us to make responsible decisions for them.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE LEAVE YOUR PETS AT HOME. If you know youāre going somewhere that your dog cannot safely come inside, leave them somewhere cool and comfortable. If you absolutely have to travel with them, plan ahead and make sure they are never left unattended in a vehicle. Do not assume cracking a window is enough. Do not assume parking in the shade makes it okay. Do not assume youāll āonly be a few minutes.ā Temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerously high very quickly, and a black vehicle sitting in the sun can become an absolute oven.
And if you are someone who says, āWell, my dog does fine in the car,ā please understand that this is not about whether your dog has tolerated it before. Heat affects every animal differently, and you cannot predict when a dog will suddenly become seriously ill. By the time a dog is showing obvious signs of heat distress, the situation can already be extremely serious. Excessive panting, weakness, drooling, confusion, vomiting, collapse, and unresponsiveness are not things to ignore.
I donāt care if you think youāre only running into the store for five minutes. I donāt care if your dog loves car rides. I donāt care if the windows are cracked. If it is dangerously hot outside, your dog does not belong sitting alone inside a parked vehicle. Leave your pets at home with access to a safe, cool environment. If you have a legitimate reason your animal needs to remain with you, make arrangements that actually keep them safe. And if you are able to safely keep the air conditioning running while someone remains with the vehicle, do soābut the safest option is always to avoid leaving them unattended in the first place.
Our pets donāt understand why weāre leaving them. They donāt know how long weāll be gone. They canāt make the decision to get themselves somewhere cooler. They trust us to protect them, and that responsibility should never be taken lightly. Please look out for animals this summer. If you see a pet in a hot vehicle and believe they are in danger, take the situation seriously and contact the appropriate authorities or emergency services rather than simply walking away.
A dog sitting in a hot car is not an inconvenience, and this is not something to shrug off. It can be the difference between an animal going home safely and an animal not making it home at all. Please, leave your pets at home. Keep them cool. Keep them safe. They deserve someone who will put their well-being before convenience.
