At So Fetch Dog Training, I am dedicated to fear free, science-based training methods. This means I do not use aversives such as prongs and e-collars. Studies show that these tools lead to negative behavior fall out and only appear to work by shutting the dog down creating the illusion of a calm dog. Instead, I focus on making training fun (for you and your dog). This way your dog will WANT to listen to you!

Harley Jane learns down. Such a smart pup, she learned it in 2 minutes!

Start by taking a treat to your dogs nose and slowly moving it down between their paws. Hold it there and wait for your dog to offer a down. Then mark “yes” and reward.
Once consistently following the treat lure, begin using a hand signal instead and verbally saying “down” as your pup lays down.
Once consistently with that, then say “down” and wait for your pup to lay down. After about 10 seconds you can help your pup out with the hand signal if needed.

Pro tips:
🐾Practice on a comfortable surface like a fluffy blanket, dog bed, or even couch.
🐾Reinforce in position a few times to prevent popping up after the treat.

More loose leash walking with Harley Jane. Here she is learning the cue “let’s go”. Get your dogs attention, say “let’s go”, and start moving away from them. Mark “yes” and treat as soon as they start moving towards you. I also call this the follow me game or tag. Once your dog knows the game you don’t even need to say “let’s go” just reinforce when they follow you and have fun!

Pro tip:
🐾Play this game off leash or on a 15’ long line.

First lesson with little Harley Jane! In this clip we are working on loose leash walking and I am talking about the importance of having a leash long enough to allow your dog the freedom to move at their natural pace (7’ length can make a world of difference. I love for adjustable length leashes).

Pro tip:
🐾To prevent the pattern of your dog getting a treat and going straight back to pulling, continue to reward your dog several times as they are still close to you. Also, drop treats behind you as you move forward to further reinforce them not hitting the end of the leash and engaging with you.

Fun at the park with my two favorite boys 💛🤍

Thomas did such a good job practicing settling around dogs and in a busy public space. 👏🏻

Pro tip:
🐾Start at home and then once outside practice with no distractions at first and very gradually practice with higher distraction levels.
🐾Absolutely do NOT tether your dog without giving them a calming enrichment activity. Tethering your restless dog actually creates so much frustration and if your dog does finally give up you haven’t taught them to settle, instead you’ve taught them learned helplessness.

Happy Mother’s Day from my first born and baby! 💐🐾🥂🐶

It’s been so fun boarding Ever these last few days!
We did a little training for name response, but the majority of the time we were just having fun. 🖤

Ever is weary of new people so I wanted to focus on building a bond with her. I’m happy to say that she is now my buddy and although she still doesn’t want to cuddle, she now trusts me enough to lay down next to me and let me take off/put on her harness and leash. 🥹

If you’re not having fun training then you’re dog isn’t either. Focus on your relationship and the obedience will come much easier.

Ever was such a good girl today during her stay! She’s a bit weary of people so I have had a few meet and greets with her and her parents so she could feel more comfortable with me. Today we did a short stay to ease her into her boarding stay next month.

Tips for nervous dogs:
🐾IGNORE, IGNORE, IGNORE
🐾 Do not hold out your hand towards them, baby talk to them, or make direct eye contact.
🐾Try tossing treats to them or dropping treats and walking away.

Pardon the stuffy nose 😅 just having some fun. Also, has the best dog gear!

Pro tips for loose leash walking:
🐾Get a longer leash.
🐾Bring treats and reward engagement.
🐾Make engaging with you fun! Even high value treats can become boring depending on how you deliver it.
🐾Set your dog up for success by practicing in a low distraction environment and allowing plenty of time to sniff and explore before working on loose leash walking.
🐾Never get frustrated at your dog. They’re just being a dog. Anything they do “wrong” is feedback for you to adjust your training.

She had a microchip and has been returned to . I’m not sure who exactly was the person who dumped her at the park, but now she is safe and will hopefully find her forever home soon!

Doggie Bonez rescue has been very communicative and helpful. I’m so glad rescues like them exist!
