💩 That p**p in your backyard doesn’t necessarily stay in your backyard.
Here in Fruita, we live alongside the Colorado River—and what happens in our yards can eventually affect our waterways.
Here’s how:
🌧️ 1. Rain + snowmelt picks it up
When rain or snowmelt moves across your yard, it can pick up bacteria, parasites, nitrogen, phosphorus, and other pollutants from dog waste.
➡️ 2. Runoff carries it away
That water can flow into streets, drainage systems, ditches, creeks, and eventually larger waterways. Stormwater often reaches streams and rivers without going through a wastewater treatment plant.
💧 3. It ends up in our waterways
Pet waste is a documented source of f***l bacteria and nutrient pollution in surface water. EPA notes that pet waste can contribute bacteria, nutrients, and pathogens to local waters.
🌿 4. It can disrupt the ecosystem
Those extra nutrients can encourage excessive algae and plant growth. As organic matter decomposes, it can consume oxygen in the water—creating conditions that are harder on fish and other aquatic life.
🏊♀️ 5. And it affects people, too.
F***l contamination can make waterways less safe for recreation and can expose people and animals to harmful microorganisms. That matters for anyone who fishes, swims, boats, hikes, lets their kids play near the river, or simply cares about the health of the place we call home.
One dog. One pile. One yard might not seem like much.
But across an entire community, those piles add up.
So when we scoop the p**p, we’re not just keeping our yards clean.
We’re helping keep Fruita clean.
We’re protecting our waterways.
And we’re doing our part for the Colorado River. 💜🐾
That’s one more reason we’re proud to do what we do at Pup Pup Pick Up.
Clean yards. Healthier pets. A cleaner community.
