My malinois, Skye, and I didnt run last night- so we got up super early and ran this morning- before the brutal heat crept in.

We were coming up on mile 2 and coming out of the park and back into the neighborhood. As we turn into the neighborhood, we stay along the sidewalk and run along all the cul de sacs (any extra yardage i can squeeze out!) And as we run by th3 second house in this cul de sac- Skye alerts me.

Skye starts pulling towards the second house. I also notice there's water 3 feet deep in the front yard - and a hose just running... unusual... I also notice the screen door and front door are wide open. Also very unusual. There are tall hedges so i can't see the ground very well but I know to follow my dog when she is alerting me.

Thank god I followed her because there was an elderly man laying face down on the front step- his feet were what was propping the doors open.

I called 911. I instantly squatted down next to the man- made Skye sit next to him- asked him questions. He was conscious but had laid there all night. He had come out to water his yard and fell and couldn't get up. No one saw him bc of the bushes and how he had fallen just behind the shrubs. He is 85.

EMS arrives and they ask if my dog is friendly. I say yes. They ask a ton of questions and then it took 8 firemen to get this fellow up off the ground (he is like 6'5"!) They checked his vitals and said everything looked ok but took him to the hospital to make sure he's ok. He did have scraps on his face.

After EMS had him secured in the ambulance- they came over to me to ask questions. And of course to pet Skye. They asked how I found him- and I said - I didn't. My dog did!

This pic of Skye was minutes before all that happened- we were just coming out of the park and I snapped her photo.

I love Skye. I've had lots of dogs before. But never have I ever had a dog like this! I am so grateful Skye was with me- my other dog would have not even noticed! He would have kept bopping along! Skye kept me calm and level headed. And she was a distraction. The man was asking about her while we waited for EMS- she kept him awake and talking.

I don't deserve this dog.

I love this dog.

Skye is an absolute rock star. She is my hero.

Took my sweet 13 yo boy to the vet today for some pain meds and instead, upon physical exam, was met with the idea that his pain might be coming from a swollen liver and belly. Blood came back relatively normal aside from some elevated liver enzymes however his X-rays hid all his organs because there were so much fluid in his abdomen. All she could see was something was pushing back his lungs and pushing his trachea up. We tried an ultrasound and it showed what she suspected to be a tumor (didn’t want to confirm since she’s not an ultrasound tech). The vet said with that much fluid in his stomach the cause is most likely cancer and the placement of the “tumor”his case is most likely inoperable.. and if I tried who knows how much time it would give me or how successful it might be. My worst fear was confirmed, my boy is ready to leave this world. I have made an apt with lap of love for Friday to bring him to peace at home. Looking for ideas to give my boy the best next 48 hrs possible. He can’t do much but I want it to be special 💜 I knew this would be hard but it feel unbearable, I’ve never cried this much my whole life. A photo of him today vs at 1 yo.

This is not the first time my dad did this. Back in 2020, he also surprised me with a siamese cat beacuse I was anxious at the time and needed to stop overthinking. So his solution was to make me think about my new cat and how to take care of it. Now kitty and I are besties and our hobby is to brood in a dark room away from the sun....

Now my dad did again with a Belgian Malinois, this time citing my lack of physical exercise and sunlight...only this time I think he has gone too far 😵‍💫

I just finished scrolling around the internet trying to figure out how to take care of this pup, but oh boy, just thinking about its daily routine is already tiring me out haha. He is still just a cute little puppy right now and he's very affectionate. My cat doesn't cuddle with me, but this puppy loves hugs I love him already!

It's only been two days since I had him but I took him to a vet already because he seemed to have stomach pain, kept throwing up and seemed to have difficulty pooping. I feel so bad because it was my fault for feeding him too much dog food and less milk. I thought he could eat solid foods already.

Can you please give me advise on what I should do and prepare for in the future? Like first aid procedures in case theres no vet, early training techniques, diet, essential things I should have, etc. I've taken care of a shih tzu before, but not this young and she was a lapdog that didn't require much. I dont think same care applies to this adorable future tazmanian devil.
