While we are now back to our normal schedule, we are still tackling appointments that were rescheduled while Dr. McAndrews was injured. What does that mean for our clients? Routine dentistry appointments are booking about 4-5 weeks out. Luckily, our practice software sends reminders 1 month out, and again 2 weeks out! If you get a 1 month reminder that says your horse is due for routine dentistry, we HIGHLY recommend calling and booking an appointment to try to stay close to your horse's normal schedule. At this time, it's nearly impossible to "just squeeze them in" if you call to make a last minute appointment. Please continue to be patient with us. We are doing what we can to see your horses as promptly as possible. We appreciate the flexibility our clients have shown during this time!

We were so grateful to have had Dr. Louise Marron, a dual board-certified veterinary dental specialist, stay with us for two weeks to help us catch up on our surgical cases while Dr. McAndrews continued healing! Dr. Marron sees horses ๐Ÿด AND dogs ๐Ÿถ & cats ๐Ÿฑ for dentistry and oral surgery in Colorado! Dr. McAndrews and Dr. Marron actually completed their equine board certification at the same time, which is when this photo was taken, with Dr. Marron on the far right.

Dr. Marron has her own practice in Colorado and you can find her at "Companion Dentistry & Oral Surgery."

Thank you for all of your thoughtful messages since Dr. McAndrews's accident! We are excited to announce that we are back at work! While we are still holding down Dr. McAndrew's hands for a few more weeks, we are lucky enough to have Dr. Charlotte Weisberg coming in to help us catch up on some of our routine dentistry appointments!

If your recognize Dr. Weisberg, it's because she has ridden with us before, both when she was a student at the University of Pennsylvania and as a fully-fledged veterinarian eager to learn more about dentistry. She is a full-time associate veterinarian at an equine practice in north Jersey, but her practice has graciously allowed us to borrow her. We are excited to have her back with us for a few weeks!

Hello GSE clients! IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

As we all know, sometimes horses choose to do silly things and the humans suffer the consequences. Dr. McAndrews took quite the spill at an event on Sunday and suffered some pretty serious injuries. This is the worst case scenario that every solo practicing equine vet worries about. She will make a full recovery, but it will be slow goings here for a while.

As of right now, we are hoping that she will be able to return to work in about 3 weeks. Our scheduler Holly is away this week, so I (Alexa) am working on reaching out to our clients with appointments booked in the next three weeks. Right now, I am cancelling appointments until I receive news of an estimated return date and keeping a running list of who needs to be rebooked. I promise I will do what I can to get your horses seen as early as possible. If you have an appointment booked at New Bolton Center, they will be reaching out to you to reschedule.

This is one of our busiest times of year, so please be patient as we try to get what is an already jam-packed schedule rearranged. If you have a routine appointment booked in the next 6 weeks and would like to voluntarily bump it later into June or July so that I can rebook our surgery cases more urgently, please TEXT the office number with your name & horse's name and I will get that taken care of. It is much easier for me to respond to and keep track of texts at this time.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused, but life with horses is full of surprises outside of our control. We are just grateful she is on the road to recovery.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month and the perfect time to spread awareness about the importance of oral health in our horses!

Because you can't ask a horse if anything is wrong, and you certainly can't ask them to open their mouth and say "ahhhhh," routine oral exams by a veterinarian with sedation, a speculum, a bright light, and a mirror are essential. This is the only way to evaluate, diagnose, and treat dental problems. You can't evaluate what you can't see!

Sharp enamel points, fractured teeth, periodontal disease, geriatric wear, oral masses, and more can all affect a horse's performance as well as their overall health and wellbeing.

We recommend that all horses have at least yearly oral exams by a veterinarian! For National Pet Dental Health Month, share this post to remind your friends about the importance of dental care for their equine companions!

And now to introduce the last two (or 1.5) horses of Garden State Equine! These are Alexa's horses! Oakley is a 10 year old Quarter Horse that she got as a weanling, and Poppy is a 2 year old miniature horse she recently acquired as a companion for Oakley. For completeness, the muppet-dog is Nelson, a 1.5 year old Wirehaired Pointing Griffon!

Can you believe there are 8 horses between the 4 of us at the practice?!

We hope everyone had a great holiday! It sure looks like Halle did! โ„๏ธ

This is Halle's horse, Margot! Margot is a quarter horse mare and is Halle's very first horse! Not sure if her dogs, Pete & Pablo, are thrilled about sharing the love ๐Ÿ˜‚ But they all seem to be in the holiday spirit!

These 5 teeth all look VERY different, but they actually all belong to the same horse! This mouth belongs to a 3 year old Standardbred and the teeth all look vastly different because they are all at different stages of eruption. The mouths of young horses change quickly!

Photos 1 & 2 are the 107 (upper right 3rd premolar) and 108 (upper right 4th premolar).

Photos 3 & 4 are the 407 (lower right 3rd premolar) and 408 (lower right 4th premolar).

Photo 5 is the 708 (the deciduous 308 or โ€œcapโ€ of the lower left 4th premolar).

The 708 is a deciduous cap on top of the permanent 308. This cap will shed very soon as the 308 erupts into the mouth. The 108 and 408 have just shed their deciduous caps, and the teeth are not quite in wear yet. Notice the cusps these teeth have that will soon be worn down. The 107 and 407 look the most โ€œnormalโ€ because they are in occlusion with the opposing teeth and have been in use.
