Liver Changes on Bloodwork? Here's What Ultrasound Can Help Us Learn.

When bloodwork identifies elevated liver values, your veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound examination.

Ultrasound can help evaluate:

✅ Liver appearance and structure

✅ Gallbladder health

✅ Bile ducts

✅ Nearby abdominal organs

✅ Changes that may not be visible on bloodwork alone

Ultrasound Case Spotlight 🐾🔍
This patient was referred for hematuria and prostatomegaly, and abdominal ultrasound provided important clarity.
Key Findings
🔸 Enlarged, heterogeneous, mineralized prostate with mild cavitation
🔸 Abnormal prostatic tissue extending into the bladder trigone
🔸 Moderately distended bladder containing mixed echogenic debris (cellular material, mucus, hematoma)
🔸 Bilateral adrenal enlargement
🔸 Left sublumbar lymphadenopathy
🔸 Splenomegaly with smooth, uniform parenchyma
🔸 Normal kidneys, liver contour, pancreas, and GI tract

Clinical Significance
The prostate’s appearance is most concerning for prostatic carcinoma or transitional cell carcinoma, with chronic prostatitis considered less likely. The enlarged sublumbar lymph node may represent metastatic disease or reactive lymphadenopathy.

Recommended Next Steps
• Ultrasound‑guided FNA/cytology of the prostate and lymph node
• Staging thoracic imaging • Adrenal evaluation for hyperplasia vs hyperadrenocorticism
• Continued monitoring of liver and spleen changes

Ultrasound remains essential for identifying structural disease early and guiding targeted diagnostics.

Ultrasound Case Spotlight 🐾
This patient presented with progressive weight loss, leukocytosis, and a recent episode of vomiting. Ultrasound revealed multiple GI abnormalities:
✨ Mass at the pylorus/PDJ extending into the proximal duodenum
✨ Second suspected small intestinal mass
✨ Diffuse small intestinal thickening with prominent muscularis
✨ Multiple enlarged abdominal lymph nodes
✨ Mild renal changes, mild splenomegaly, and a prominent pancreas
These findings raise concern for multifocal GI neoplasia, IBD, infectious/granulomatous disease, or eosinophilic enteritis.
Recommended Next Steps
• FNA/cytology of GI masses and/or lymph nodes
• Upper GI endoscopy or surgical biopsy
• Thoracic radiographs to check for metastasis
• Monitoring renal values
• Quantitative fPLI for pancreatic assessment

Ultrasound remains essential for identifying complex GI disease and guiding targeted diagnostics when clinical signs are vague but progressive.
