Your bird feeder can attract far more than just seed-loving finches. Cardinals often favor sunflower and mixed seed, Blue Jays are especially fond of peanuts, nuthatches and chickadees readily visit for sunflower, peanuts, and suet, while American Goldfinches are strongly attracted to nyjer and sunflower chips. Mourning Doves prefer feeding on the ground or a platform, and hummingbirds need nectar rather than birdseed.

Offering several food types and feeder styles can bring a greater variety of birds to your yard. Just as important: keep feeders clean, replace wet or spoiled seed, refresh birdbath water frequently, and change hummingbird nectar every few days—more often during hot weather. Bird preferences can vary by season and region, but providing fresh, appropriate food is one of the easiest ways to make your backyard more welcoming to local birds.

Encouraging news for monarch butterflies. 🦋 The eastern monarch population overwintering in Mexico increased by 64% during the 2025–2026 season compared with the previous winter.

Favorable weather appears to have played an important role, while ongoing conservation efforts—including protecting habitat and planting milkweed and nectar-rich native flowers—continue to support monarchs throughout their migration and breeding range.

It’s a hopeful sign, but monarchs still face long-term challenges from habitat loss, extreme weather, pesticide exposure, and declining availability of the plants they depend on. Creating pollinator-friendly spaces at home and in communities remains one practical way to give these remarkable travelers more places to feed, reproduce, and rest.
