The other day Sticks and I helped out during a friends CGCA/CGCU class! This was great practice for us as well as the other teams.

- AKC CGCA (Canine Good Citizen Advanced): A certification that shows a dog has good manners at home and in the community.
- AKC CGCU (Canine Good Citizen Urban): Focuses on good behavior in urban settings, like busy streets and public places.
Both programs promote responsible dog ownership and positive behavior. They have many similarities though there are some different test items for each test!

For AKC CGCA: (the advanced CGC)
- Sit politely for petting
- Walk on a loose leash
- Come when called
- Stay in place
- React politely to distractions

For AKC CGCU (Urban):
- Handle distractions like traffic and crowds
- Walk calmly on busy sidewalks
- Wait patiently at curbs
- Ignore food on the ground
- Settle calmly in public places

These are great goals for any dog! Pet dog, service dog or therapy dog! Have questions about the CGC or any of its higher levels? Message us today!

Warmer days are ahead!

Does your dog like swimming to keep cool? Maybe they find a short hike in a shaded area fun on warmer days! No matter the activity here’s some tips to avoid your pup overheating and/or experiencing heat exhaustion!

- Provide plenty of fresh, cool water at all times.
- Avoid exercising your dog during the hottest parts of the day; early morning or late evening is best.
- Offer shade or keep your dog indoors in a cool, ventilated area.
- Never leave your dog in a parked car, even for a short time.
- Use cooling mats or damp towels on your dog’s body if needed.
- Watch for signs of overheating like excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.
- Keep walks shorter and slower when it’s hot outside.
- Consider using a cooling vest or bandana for extra protection. (Though if it’s humid this might not really work!)

Keeping these tips in mind is sure to keep you and your pup safe!

Have you ever seen a service dog along side an employee at their job?

Rather you have or haven’t here’s some basic rules you should follow!

❌- Do NOT touch the dog. Petting anyone’s dog without permission is very unsafe but petting a service dog can be a major distraction and safety issue for the handler

❌- Do NOT make eye contact with the dog or stare at the team (staring is rude)

✅- DO talk directly to the handler and not their dog. It is polite to address people directly when speaking to them. Act as if the dog is not even there.

( P.S. we love Fort Frenzy )

Train your dog - trust your dog

Trusting your dog is super important because it builds a strong bond between you and them. When your dog trusts you, they're more relaxed and confident, which makes training easier and helps prevent fear or aggression. Plus, it makes your time together enjoyable and safe.

So how can you build your trust with your dog?

To develop greater trust in your dog, begin by carefully observing their behavior in various situations to understand their temperament and reactions. Spend quality time engaging in calm, consistent activities such as walks or gentle play to build familiarity and confidence in their responses. Acknowledge and reinforce positive behaviors with praise, which will help strengthen your confidence in their reliability. Remember, trust is reciprocal, so maintaining patience and consistency is essential for building a strong, trusting relationship.

🐾 Did you know today is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day? 🐾

What are the benefits of adopting a shelter pet?

You’re saving more than one life. By adopting a shelter pet, you’re opening up more space for another animal in need while also giving your new shelter pet a second chance at a life they deserve.

You’ll be loved unconditionally. Want to get out and go for a walk? Your nee shelter dog will happily tag along. Want to sit and be a couch potato for the evening? I bet your new shelter cat loves to snuggle. You were away from home a little longer than expected today? They will still be so excited to see you come home—even if you don’t bring treats with you.

Life will never be boring and you’ll laugh way more than you did before adopting your shelter pet. Each animal has their own unique personality and can bring so much (sometimes unusual) joy into your life.

Take a look at the animals we have available for adoption and fill out an application to bring your next furry friend home!
