One of the things I’ve been doing for my personal development is watching some of the infinite horse training videos floating around on the internet - not to judge others or validate my own practices, but rather to try and understand where people are coming from and gather information on what horses in varying contexts might be trying to share.

Something that I’ve seen come up a LOT is folks asking their horses to move forward or away from them, using arms/sticks/ropes/voice, while simultaneously and unconsciously asking the horse to come IN with their bodies. I’ve been there (and definitely frustrated my horse like that).

Anyhow - this is a little snippet from a video I put together for my mentorship group, explaining a little about how I define and use space now AND how that helps me communicate clearly with my horses ✨

Something that I know about myself is that my body tends towards stillness rather than movement, heaviness rather than lightness. It’s the kind of gift that allows me to sit very still and be mentally focused for long stretches (perhaps a product of/one of the reasons I was so successful in the jewelry making field).

However, I’ve got a horses. Horses that want to move and flow and find a physical forward in our time together - and if I’m not paying attention, I end up coming to them with the metaphorical handbrake on.

A change I’m making is finding agreements about forward when we begin our sessions. Mostly, it turns out, that’s an agreement I make with myself to release the brakes, release the brakes (release the brakes!!). This looks like prioritizing forward flow and rhythm first, and allowing other movements and asks to rise from the energy we’ve made available.

Hi - I’m Hayley! I live in Northern Colorado with my husband Eric, kiddo Remi, and a collection of beloved four-legged friends. Keep on swiping to read about each of our animal family members (introduced in the order that they joined our family so they can’t say I was playing favorites!!).

Eleanore (Ellie, Ellie Bean, Brown Cat, Brown) - 12 yo tabby cat

Eric and I brought Ellie home the second week of our senior year of college. We went to the Humane Society “just to look” (yeah, right lol) and found her reaching out for us with both of her kitty arms fully thrust through the bars of her crate. We took her home straight away.

I remember Eric having some qualms the first few months because…kitten energy. And I remember him wondering if we’d made a TERRIBLE MISTAKE bringing home this little, wild thing. In my head I was thinking, “ohhh this is only the beginning!” 😉

For me, Ellie relentlessly and mischievously points out any and all places where I’m being rigid. She will only come in for a snuggle when I let ALL of my defenses down (something I am still learning how to do, she tells me!).

Storm (Stormalorm, Storp) - 11 yo tuxedo cat

When we found out that Eric had gotten a job in CA after college, I immediately decided we needed another cat to be Ellie’s friend. Eric moved immediately after graduation while I stayed behind for the summer in CO to take an equine massage course.

I combed the listings of the San Francisco SPCA every day - and about a month before I moved, I saw a picture of a little black kitten that I couldn’t get out of my head. I was sure he would be adopted by the time I arrived but…no. Three days after I moved to the city, the SPCA waived kitten adoption fees for the weekend and we went to get him.

Storm is the only one of our animals that we didn’t name. Though we tried lots of options, I’d already been calling him Storm for too long - and the name stuck.

He is exceptionally skittish…and also exceptionally friendly. Playful but also wary. If he sits on our laps (which he loves to do), we must forever be prepared for him to launch, claws out. Largely, now, we remember to put a protective pillow on our laps before he settles in!

Call them back-
The vines creeping, the tendrils overgrown-
All those lonely, lovely loose ends left
Flapping in the wind.
You are not empty, just unwoven, a bit-
In need of a hand to realign the strands.

Be the hand, call back the hawk-
You will find the feast at your table.

A midsummer, sunrise update-

There are probably things at work, outside of my awareness. My job is to keep showing up, trying my best, and adjusting as new information becomes available.

Even (and especially!) on the days I’d like to just lay down and cry about it.
