A few weeks ago, I went on an amazing road trip to New Mexico with herbalist friends Beth from Sacred Moon Herbs and Gayle from American Botanical Council. First stop was Lubbock, where we went to a cool herb shop Tumbleweed Botanicals and hung out with a bunch of prairie dogs. I requested this little prairie dog detour and it didn’t disappoint! 😄

Next we linked up with our other herbalist friend Ellen and stopped at Ojo Caliente to dip in the hot springs, watched barn swallows swooping overhead, and dorked around Santa Fe for a bit. ✨

Then we all spent 3 full days learning from Tieraona Low Dog, MD at her amazing medicine lodge in the Santa Fe National Forest. We experienced the plants in different ways, heard some epic stories about her life and career and the resident bears she knows by name, ate delicious food, connected with lovely women, and got to meet some of the herbs growing in the garden like marshmallow, chinese skullcap, wood betony, echinacea, elecampagne, grindelia, and many others. My favorite part was probably our quiet walk into the woods, where we then went off to find our own sit spot. I sat with some old ponderosa pines, whose sap smells like vanilla and butterscotch, and enjoyed the stillness. Dr. Low Dog is a nationally recognized expert in integrative medicine, herbal medicine, and dietary supplements. She’s also a martial artist, naturalist, and witchy wise woman who has a deep relationship with the more than 185 acres she and her family steward. 🌿I loved how naturally she moved between all of these worlds, weaving together the teachings and perspectives gathered from the many facets of her life. A very cool experience to learn from her.

Back at our little rental house perched up on a hill, I enjoyed epic sunsets every night and wonderful company. It was a joy to spend my birthday with such fun travel companions.

Being a grower and gardener, it can be really difficult to find time to go on any sort of vacation, especially in August. So grateful Miguel encouraged me to go and took care of all the things so I could make it happen. 🙏🏽🌼❤️

You can find us in Lockhart tomorrow at Plantasia Texas for their night market 🌙

We’ll be bringing:
🌱Neat heat-loving perennials in larger containers like curry, chaya, and henna. We love growing these plants and are happy to tell you all about them.
🪴Some of our favorite low-maintenance houseplants, including a few hanging baskets
🌼Our herbal tea blends and other seasonal offerings that feature our homegrown herbs
🌱A last little batch of heat-loving plant starts before we start phasing into fall. Plants like lemongrass, basils, peppers, Indian heirloom determinate tomatoes, molokhia, culantro, and a few more. *note: If you plant anything in the ground when it’s this hot out, we recommend doing it in the evening in a spot with afternoon shade and providing plenty of consistent water to help them get established. Otherwise moving them into larger pots works great bc you can move them around as needed.

✨hawks moths are so magical✨

This is what tomato hornworms grow up to become and we think they’re fabulous. 🙂🐛If you find a tomato hornworm and don’t want it munching your tomatoes, you don’t have to squish it. Simply move it to another nightshade plant (often plenty growing around) where it can finish growing and eventually transform into one of these beautiful night pollinators.

We always look forward to seeing them and love the sound their wings make when they plunge into these datura blooms. It was a hawk moth party tonight! 🌕

Are you looking for a heat-loving leafy green? Molokhia is a great choice. They’re beautiful plants that thrive in the summer. Toss them into your soups and stews, make the traditional dish with garlic, coriander, and chicken or broth served over rice, or experiment in any number of ways. We’ve been growing these plants for a couple years now and really like them. They can get quite tall as well, so you can strategically plant them to shade other plants from the hot summer sun. ☀️🌱

If you wanna give Molokhia a try, we’ll be bringing some plants to the San Marcos Farmers Market on Saturday. You can also find some at The Cornucopia 🌱

Last month, I had the opportunity to teach a class as part of a permaculture design program Lotus Ranch alongside some amazing teachers. I taught about plants and seeds in their beautiful space, and later that weekend, I gave a tour of our gardens and plant nursery, sharing lessons we’ve learned as we continue transforming our space.

It was such a fun experience with amazing humans doing good work in the world. Looking forward to more things like this! ☀️
