Objective Ares was the codename for a night raid carried out on October 6, 2013, in Zhari district, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The mission involved U.S. Army Rangers from 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, supported by enablers including a Cultural Support Team (CST) and a CID special agent. Their target was a Taliban attack-network leader, part of a broader counterterrorism effort in southern Afghanistan. The operation quickly turned deadly when multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs) detonated around the assault force. The blasts struck as Rangers and CST members rushed forward to treat wounded comrades, turning the objective into a mass-casualty event.
Among those killed was Capt. Jennifer Moreno, a nurse attached to the CST, who ran into the blast zone to aid a fallen Ranger. She died alongside Sgt. Patrick Hawkins, Pfc. Cody Patterson, and Special Agent Joseph Peters, with several other Rangers wounded. The tragedy at Objective Ares has become emblematic of the risks faced by both male and female operators at the tip of the spear. As highlighted in the documentary Guerrera, the raid underscored both the sacrifice of CST members and the integration of women in frontline combat roles, marking a pivotal moment in the history of U.S. special operations.
