The tiny but mighty Rosè! I hadn’t worked her at Liberty for a hot minute but I just had to before I left.

First ride on Stitch! I’m excited to put some serious time and miles on this boy.

More posts to come but for now, here’s Rosé going the 2nd time on the piano today. She’s just my type of horse, lots of grit to her. She’s one of the colts Dan’s raised here on the farm, reining and cow lines. She’s been super fun for me to mess with the last few months.

I know posts have been slow, but that isn’t from a lack of working on some ponies!
To recap, I spent last month in Nebraska working and taking care of performance quarter horses. I definitely had a good experience and learned their style of getting their colts started and freeing them up.
After this experience I was able to come home for Christmas and visit my ponies in Wyoming. I just had to get pictures with my Wildfire, who is now retired.
Wyoming is a difficult place to train horses. You’re fighting weather constantly and it’s not very reasonable to train colts-performance horses unless you have an amazing set up.. and even then, I’m from too brutal of an area to justify working horses for often weeks/months in the winter.
When I applied to go to Nebraska, I also applied to work at Double Dan Horsemanship, Dan James, in Kentucky.. and that’s where I’ve currently started. I’ve only been here for 3 days and everything from the weather, the horses, the barns here are so different for me! I’m not sure how much I will be able to share about this experience as we go, however even if this means I’m quiet on Facebook for a little bit, I am working on myself, in many ways.

I ended up looking for some positions anywhere out of Wyoming due to the winter weather making it so difficult to work horses and ended up here at Knoles Performance horses in Nebraska 🙂 They have some very nice bred quarter horses we get to ride! These were some snaps from the first day I got here. We will be pretty busy and don’t stop to use our phones but when we do get the occasional photo I will be posting some updates! I’m very excited to get around these horses and their training program.

Wildfire is the horse to make my kid dreams of starting my own wild horse come true. I first watched a 100 day wild horse challenge when I was 9 years old and I wanted so badly to be one of those amazing trainers to make a great competitive horse out of the thousands of mustangs. I picked him up for a 2 month challenge when I was 13 and he was a yearling. We made champions out of each other that show and others that came after. He not only became a solid go to horse outside of a show pen, but he showed all around against all breeds in different events. Hes small and not the most athletic thing but he was my main guy. He taught me a lot of course he wasn’t easy and it wasn’t always pretty. I took my time with him, started him light at 3 and didn’t push training until he was about 5. And even then he didnt work near as hard as most using or show horses do, not by a long shot. I always cared about the longevity of my horse, even when I was 15 starting him, I was planning on riding him for a long time. The last 2-3 years he’s had quite an easy life, taken out of the field casually for a ride or just to take for fun to a show. Recently I noticed his knee didn’t look normal and took him to get X-rays as soon as I could and he diagnosed with bone spurs. This means he is retired at 10 years old. There’s no realistic way to fix the issue. Usually this is caused by wear or genetics and being honest with myself, I know he wasn’t trained near hard enough for anything other than genetics being the most accurate conclusion. This is tough to accept but Wildfire gets to stay in the same huge field with all his buddies and just be a horse. He has earned his spot there. I do wish that I took him one last time to the mountains and really took it in. You never know when your ride will be your last. So enjoy every day with your ponies and thank them at the end of the day.
This picture was of him and some of his winnings from a show a few years back. I was so proud of him❤️

I hope that my goals with the horses best interest shines through. I love the journey each goes through and I truly care about my horses having long, happy, and useful lives. When is comes to affording, training, relocating, etc, a person can literally only have so many before they cannot get their hands on any more. My goal is to help as many horses have good lives as possible. There’s thousands of mustangs that need the right start, gentling or undersaddle, that pretty much sets that horse up for the next person to be able to be successful. The horses I’ve had to let go, I did so out of love and consideration for the horse.

Here’s a throwback picture of Winona, shel came home with all these scraps. This mare would not have been successful in many homes coming straight from the corrals. However she’s now has a start on her that sets her up for a good life. I hope that as I have come down to a manageable number, I will finally be able to put the training into a couple personal horses rather than be too overwhelmed to have trained up horses, and time for clients or projects. I think Winona will be one of those personal horses I will be able to put my time into, along with miss Rosemary ❤️

Here is a throwback photo of Winona, her first hobble session🥰

The subject of hobbling I believe is well known. Everyone has their specific uses for their horses. Knowing that, I still like to hobble train all my horses and here are my main reasons why.

The first big reason to note is safety. No one wants their horse harmed from getting tangled up. And while it’s not an exact simulation, I think it’s worth doing once they learn that they can relax and that a human will help them. It doesn’t guarantee the horse won’t get hurt but if it decreases the chances of something fatal, it’s absolutely worth it.

My common daily reason I hobble train is for standing. I like to have a horse tied while I’m working with another and trade off between the two, it helps with patience and productivity. However I don’t believe filling holes everyday is good use of my time, nor is it a habit I want to create in a horse.

Lastly, you never know who may end up with your horse. Maybe it’s a pleasure rider spending a weekend in the mountains, maybe it’s a working cowboy. With both, hobbling is very useful and sometimes very necessary. This just adds another element that helps that horse be safer and more useful when he is out of your hands.

Winona had a good change of scenery the last couple days for rides 13 & 14. We had a horse to deliver so she ended up hauling with and I ended up riding her in my grandmas grass fields. Yesterday we went up for a mountain ride. She was really good and not very spooky she just wanted to cover ground like she had a job to do. I think endurance is another thing she would be good at.
