Sad story ahead:
This post I wish I never had to write; but sometimes there are things you can’t control.
I made the decision not to compete with Cerise in the Fort Worth Mustang Show after lots of prayer and talking to other trainers and family, and I returned her to the BLM facility in Ewing.

Basically, whether something happened in holding or in the wild, I don’t know. But Cerise was VERY very aggressive, to the point that in attacking me (deliberately, both in response to something I asked AND when I wasn’t asking anything of her) she knocked me down, and bit and ripped a piece of my shirt off twice. We were able to work through some, and she made a lot of progress in between the aggression, but there were still times that I couldn’t tell what was triggering her.

After sending videos in to a trainer I really trust and getting advice from other horse people I know, I made the decision that it wasn’t worth risking being injured or seriously injured, and no matter how much better she got I could never feel comfortable with someone else taking her after the makeover because I don’t know when she would turn on them.

As much as I really wanted to compete and I miss getting to work with her (she could be really sweet!) and help a mustang learn to love being with people; some horses are just not meant for it.

I’m not posting the videos because I don’t need 500 people telling me what I did wrong right now, 😂 but if you want to see I’d be happy to send them privately! I may edit a video of her to post later.

I’m currently in Fort Worth at the Mustang Show to support my sisters Talia and Grace, they are competing with and Zoe! So I’ll be posting pictures of them. And I’ll definitely be competing in the future!

Introducing my pick for the Fort Worth Mustang Show!!
This pretty girl is a Scarlette/Carmine(and my QH Mae) triplet on paper - meaning she’s a “14hh, 6 year old sorrel mare with a star and (at least) one white foot”

In actuality she is a 6 year old, 15hh sorrel mare with a star, the prettiest head, and four white feet 😄
I adopted her in the online auction in January, but had to wait until April 18th to get her! We don’t have a working truck currently, so a super sweet lady, Mrs Carrie, trailered her here!

She’s from Maverick Medicine, NV, which is an HMA I’ve never worked with before, I’m excited to see how different she is!

We’ve had quite the adventure already, before I ever got to actually train her though 🥴 My family was out of town for a week so she got to just hang out in the pen with my sister’s gelding… and they somehow escaped their pen and got out with the other horses in our big pasture! Surprisingly, I was able to get them herded into our arena, they did manage to get out but with my sisters help they are safely in their smaller pen now 😄

I’m super excited to start training her, when they were out in the big pasture she was trying to come over to me but then would get spooked. She was really brave though and would try to face me, and even start to come to me, so I’m hoping she’s pretty confident overall! She also seems SUPER balanced on her feet and put together well… also she’s at LEAST 15 hands tall 😂

Have you worked with a Maverick Medicine before? What’s your opinion?

Also - I need help with a show name! What should I do?

She will be available at the Fort Worth Mustang Show in September! Please like, share and comment to follow along on our journey to finding her a forever home!

Makeover pics! Carmine was the best girl!! I had not prepared her NEAR enough for everything she had to handle, but she was so calm and handled everything like a pro! Horses everywhere, in an arena for the first time, wash stall, saddled multiple times a day to wait for FOREVER for our turn… she was so sweet and chill! We had only loped 11 rides when we got there, but she loped the correct lead each class!! (Not great, but the best she had done!)

She was literally perfect in our first class, handling and conditioning, earning us a tie for 3rd place… with the horse that ended up winning the whole competition!!!

She did get really bored and tired of doing nothing while waiting around but loved when I took her out to graze 😄
At the auction, I was the first and only bidder and brought her home that afternoon!
Since then I’ve been riding and having fun with her, and she’s only gotten better! Her lope is super comfortable now, we’ve been working on neck reining and hindquarter control. She’s got the best mind - I even let my non horsey (now husband) ride her and she took great care of him! She’s been mostly hanging out in the pasture but whenever I get to go out to the pasture she comes over to say hi, and when I get to play with her or ride she does as good or better than the time before! (And yes, she has gotten bigger; I’m pretty sure she’s 16hh now 😳)

Is your horse kid-safe or husband-safe? My other mustang isn’t, but Carmine for sure is!

Before I COMPLETELY redo this account though… I had to finish up Carmine’s story! I’ll do another post with Carmine-Makeover pics as well 😄
Carmine is absolutely amazing, she is SO much fun to train and just ride! She got even bigger, safer, calmer and relaxed so well, especially as she learned where her legs are 😂
At the makeover she was WAY better than I expected (including TYING FOR THIRD PLACE in our first class) but the main thing is that she was calm and tried so hard to do what I asked!! I was so proud of her!
And yes, the goal was to find her a home after the competition… but as you can probably see, I just couldn’t let her go 🤦‍♀️😍
She’s got such a good mind, I can leave her for weeks and she picks right back up where we were! Especially with how busy my personal life has been (if you follow my main account you’ll know) she has been mostly just hanging out and being a horse.
If you swipe to the last picture you can see part of what her new “job” is 😁
I’m so, so excited to keep training her and having fun with her! I’d love to teach her to be a pack horse someday, to take on hunting trips and epic trail rides!

Any questions? Have you ever planned to sell a horse but ended up keeping them? 😄

Monday, Day 34-Sunday, Day 47!
I did some more ba****ck mounting prep, since her pen was a little slick for me to actually do a good ride, so I worked on helping her find her balance with shoulder and hindquarters yields and just taking a few steps. She was really relaxed, even though she’s so tall I kinda have to jump/wiggle/climb onto her. I also worked on her not being as head shy, she’s okay, just doesn’t like her mouth being touched or me walking at her face quickly. Then… we left on a week long family vacation in Florida! So she got another week and a half off, basically. When we got home she again was right back where I left her, mentally and remembering wise! I was really impressed with her! I also brushed her really well and took progress report pictures, she doesn’t have the most photogenic face but I love her forelock!

How does your horse do after time off?

Monday, Day 26-Sunday, Day 33!
SO many firsts - First Sit, first Saddling, FIRST RIDE!!!
Carmine continued to amaze me with how confident she was with new things, especially the saddle and me being on and above her! She was super chill with me jumping and sliding and bumping into her, and was really relaxed with me getting on her ba****ck. She didn’t offer to buck or anything with the saddle on, and when I got on her she literally relaxed MORE! Lowered her head, yawned, licked and chewed - she honestly felt the most relaxed with me on her that she had yet! She did take a few steps of HQY when I got on her, but it felt like unbalanced steps, but she never got tight in her back or tensed up, it was so amazing! I just asked for a few steps this time, we’ll build from there!

Do you practice getting on your horse ba****ck first?

Monday, Day 19-Sunday, Day 25
I had a great week with Carmine! She literally picked right back up where we stopped when I left for a week - and she was only a week and a half from the wild! It was super muddy and slick with all the rain we’ve been having, but we were able to work on leading, getting her comfortable with me around her, and getting her more used to my tools and different things. She likes me at her withers, is learning to like face rubs but lets me halter her fine.

She handles new things really well, I LOVE watching her think through things and figure out what to do, she’s going to be such a fun horse to ride places! She is SO chill with me jumping around and acting all crazy, if the ground was better I would totally have gotten on her ba****ck! I just didn’t have a good pen to work in, yet, so I focused on getting things better. She had a harder time with head down, but started to figure it out (like on her own, when I was just doing things).

How does your horse do with you being silly around them?

HELLO EVERYONE! I am SO sorry for disappearing, yes, we are alive and well and just crazy busy!! Carmine has been doing SO good! I’m going to post chronologically, so this is from way back in March/April!

I spent some time with Carmine on the weekend, and worked on leading. It was really hard to do with all the mud though. I left on Monday, Day 12 for a week in Texas doing two clinics with ! My original plan was to bring Carmine, so I got up early to work on trailer loading, but one of the other horses I was bringing wasn’t too happy with loading in the trailer, and it was too muddy to bring the trailer close to her pen. I hadn’t led her out of the pen yet, and it would have been a long walk, through the gate and past the house and a bunch of things that she hadn’t met yet so I made the hard decision to just leave her home and took Skye, my forever mustang with me.
I had a wonderful week, I learned so much, met old friends and made new ones, and got to hang out with my extended family who lives around there! I got up EARLY and drove the 9 hours back by myself on Monday, day 19! Carmine was literally THE SAME or BETTER as when I left - I cannot believe the mind on this girl!

I will be posting every day until the makeover - I’ll be catching up to present day soon, I have SO MUCH to share!

Do you have any questions? Anything you want to know about Carmine?

On Monday, day 5, I had my second actual training day! I was able to make a lot of progress with her, though I didn’t get to halter her. I did put a lariat on her, and she let me pet her and move it around and we were able to start following a feel with hindquarter yielding and a few steps forward! She didn’t really have a problem with feeling the rope on her, but leaned pretty hard before figuring out to turn and face me. I did a lot of asking her to just look towards me, and she started to understand it better. She let me take the lariat off no problem and pet her.

Tuesday, Day 6 was super rainy and I wasn’t really able to do anything with Carmine. But Wednesday, Day 7 was awesome!! It was really only Day 3 of actually training her, and we did our first haltering! She’s really good about being petted on her neck and back, but wasn’t sure about her head. So I worked a lot on that, I used the whip to get her used to everything as well as the lariat, and we ended our first session of the day with getting the halter on! I let her wear it about a minute, then she relaxed so I took it off.

Thursday, Day 8 was Awesome!! Carmine made SO much progress! I brushed her mane and tail, picked up all four hooves, petted her all over, worked on leading and lunging, yielding and backing, and she did SOOOOO good! I didn’t lead her out of her pen yet, but we’re almost there! I’m really impressed with how well she thinks through things! She leads pretty well, better on her left side but we made a lot of progress on her right side too! She lets me walk up and pet her, she tends to lean her head away but is learning to turn back towards me!

Friday, Day 9 was SUPER rainy so I didn’t get to do anything with Carmine except pet her a bit when it was feeding time. It was thunderstorm-and-lightning almost all day.

I haven’t done near as much journaling about what I did, do y’all want me to do more “general” posts or go back to doing detailed ones, once I catch up to where we are now?

On Saturday, Day 4 I spent a little time with her in the morning and evening, but didn’t get to really train her any. On Sunday she ate alfalfa from my hand, I got to spend a bit of time with her at the morning feeding. At some point in the middle of the night she banged/scraped/rubbed her face on the panel (not bleeding, just hair missing) but seems to be fine. She lets me walk up to her left side, not her right side yet.

I’m really excited to get to work with her more, what do y’all think she’s going to be good at?

Day 2 with my new mustang… meet Carmine!!!!
I still have to come up with a good show name for her, but I feel like Carmine fits since it’s a color of red (like Scarlette), ends with an E, and is a little unusual. My nickname for her is Smart Girl 😄
I had a really good day with her, though a little eventful as well - She got a health certificate for our trip coming up soon!
I did get to spend about 20 minutes working on haltering her before the vet came out, but didn’t get a halter on. She is pretty sensitive about things near her head, and she really doesn’t want me on her right side yet. She did good though, she’s really good about turning and facing me! She lets me walk up and pet her pretty well. I was able to work with her some in the afternoon as well, at liberty getting her used to being petted more - I can pet her neck, shoulders, back and sides on her left side, and started petting over her back some. She’s really good about that, and I was able to get closer to her right side as well! She doesn’t want her face touched, so I worked on approaching and retreating with that.

On Saturday, Day 3, I spent a little time with her in the morning and evening, but didn’t get to train her any. On Sunday, Day 4, she ate alfalfa from my hand, I got to spend a bit of time with her at the morning feeding. She somehow scraped/rubbed her face on the panel (not bleeding, just hair missing) but seems to be just fine. She lets me walk up to her left side, not her right side yet.

Does your horse like to have their face petted?
Do you have any show name suggestions?

Day 1 with my makeover mare - SHE IS AMAZING! I spent a couple minutes with her, technically, at the morning feeding, aka I didn’t just walk in and feed her. After breakfast I went out and worked with her… AND I GOT HER TAG OFF IN AN HOUR! She is Super good at facing me, she even started to take a step towards me! I did lots of approach and retreat, I didn’t have to ask her to walk or trot much at all. She is sensitive about being touched on her nose, she’s much more comfortable with me close to her neck. And she really doesn’t want me on her right side yet.

So I mainly focused on getting close to her left side, and then resting with me on her right side. She let me pet her nose a bit, and then I worked on getting close to her neck and she let me fiddle with the neck tag, and then just work it loose and take it off, didn’t take a step away! I stopped there for our first actual session.

In the afternoon I went back out and worked on petting her more, she let me pet all on her neck, shoulder, and down her back, on her left side! I was able to start working my way towards her right side some, but she still preferred me on her left side. I also introduced the halter to her, didn’t put it on just petted her with it. And we finished the session with a bunch of yawning!!
My mom came out to see her so I spent a few minutes with her then as well.

I am SO impressed with how well she learns things, and how quick she’s been! She isn’t super curious with her nose, but is really good with touch and with facing me and even yielding her hindquarters!

Have you had a big difference between horses and tag-taking-off time?
