Here I am leading the same calf in the open. I use a fenceline to help keep the calf straight. I walk slightly at his hindquarters to use his instinct to walk forward. I let him lead, so in essence, he is doing it somewhat willingly. I also use the short command "walk". I want it to be as pleasant experience as possible. It is not natural for them and one bad experience can set you back. I will continue this in the open in my short 10 to 15 minute lead lessons, ideally, 5 to 6 days a week. More than one time a day, spaced out doesn't hurt either. Once he becomes more comfortable, I will be able to walk along side of him. If I were to try walking along side of him this early on in his training, he would stop moving forward and trying to drag a Zebu calf will lead to fighting and body flopping on the ground. Holding his head down is one way he shows me that the experience in uncomfortable. I will look for his body posture to relax and his head to come up as a sign of confidence before positioning my body position at his shoulder or head.

Lead training, first day!! So Breaker has worn the halter and is used to it by now. It is only my second year of Zebu breeding, and I have learned some tricks to the process. Pressure can make them want to move against it when applied, so I don't hold a steady pressure. I like to use short and gentle give and take on the lead until I get the desired response, which is to move forward, not back. As soon as I get the response I want, I stop the repeated tugs and let slack the lead. This works as a reward along with praise. I repeat these steps in short lessons that last 10 to 15 minutes. I don't expect them to get it right away. This process can take weeks, depending on the calves personality. The key is, starting young, consistency, and patience. Penny's calf was just 7 hours old when it began to rain around 3pm and it just let up. Mom and baby are enjoying a dry stall tonight.

This guy is TINY! I expect him to mature no taller than 33". He will be available in 4 months, and just in time for a Christmas present 🎄

Our new bull calf may not have a lot of pattern, but i know two ponies that are hiding 1 paint and 1 appaloosa under their already growing winter coats. A body clip and bath help them get through the long Florida summers!
