🥚 Eggciting News from 4J’s Cajun Homestead! 🐣

Our JMF MeatMaker line hatching eggs have arrived and are officially headed into the incubator! 🤎

These eggs come from genetics tracing back to the JMF MeatMaker line originally developed by James Marie Farms. We’re excited to hatch them, grow them out, and carefully select the best birds to establish our own breeding flock here at 4J’s Cajun Homestead.

Our goal isn’t to rush it—we want to build a healthy, productive, quality breeding group first. If everything goes as planned, we’re hoping to begin offering JMF MeatMaker line hatching eggs in early 2027! 🥚🐥

For now, the waiting begins. 🤞 Come on little MeatMakers!

It’s happening guys!!

We are well on our way!! Laken is up for 5 every morning to go check on the quail, pull any late night eggs and check on the chicks in the brooder and eggs on the incubator!!

By the first of the year, he’s hoping to have the following mutations ready to start selling some hatching eggs:

1. Jumbo Browns(currently available)
2. Jumbo Whites(in brooder)
3. Celadon(in incubator)
4. JMF MeatMakers( going in incubator tomorrow)
5. Black Banded(going in incubator next week)
6. Pearl Fees(incubator the following week)

Some chicks will be available off each hatch pending on hatch rates!!

We are trying to get on a weekly hatching schedule!

The Celadon eggs have officially arrived!! 🩵🥚

Look at all those gorgeous shades of blue! 😍 We are SO excited to get these babies into the incubator and see what this hatch brings.

These eggs are the beginning of our Celadon breeding project here at 4J’s Cajun Homestead. Our goal is to hatch, grow out, and carefully select our future breeders so we can eventually offer our own Celadon hatching eggs and chicks. 🐣

Now comes the hard part… waiting for hatch day! 😂

🥚🔦 Candling Day at 4J’s Cajun Homestead! 🐣

Laken got to do some candling this morning and check on how our little eggs are developing!

Out of the 30 eggs we checked, 24 are showing development and only 6 appeared clear so far. That puts us at about 80% developing! 🙌🐣

Still have another 70ish eggs left to check this evening!!

Candling is one of the coolest parts of incubation—you get a little peek inside and can actually see the veins and signs of new life growing inside the egg. ❤️

This quail project isn’t just about raising birds. Laken is getting hands-on experience with incubation, breeding, genetics, record keeping, and flock selection every step of the way.

Now we keep them warm, keep watching, and wait for hatch day! 🐥

🥚🐣 Almost to the final countdown on at 4J’s Cajun Homestead!

Our incubator is loaded up and holding steady at 99.5°F. Now comes the hard part… waiting! But fear not, tomorrow night we are candling eggs to see what’s developing and what’s not!!

Every hatch is another opportunity for us to learn, improve our flock, and work toward the Coturnix lines we want to build here on the homestead. We’re especially excited to see what comes out of this batch!

From egg ➡️ chick ➡️ carefully selected breeder, we’re just getting started. 💛

🥚 GOOD MORNING FROM 4J’S CAJUN HOMESTEAD! 🐣

The girls are getting settled in, and yesterday’s egg collection gave us 26 beautiful little quail eggs!

And several of these hens are just getting started laying, so we’re excited to see those numbers grow as everyone settles into their new home.

One of our favorite parts of this project has been watching it turn into more than just raising quail. Laken’s been learning about breeding, genetics, incubation, record keeping, egg production, and what it actually takes to build a small homestead business from the ground up.
