Dogs can’t speak English. But we can learn to listen.

Two days ago, Jasper started seeking out shady patches of grass to rest—and was walking a little slower than usual. A lot of people miss it. We might keep going, keep pulling, keep demanding “obedience.”

But behavior is communication. So I grabbed my phone and slowed down the footage.

Jasper appears to have injured his hind left knee.

If I’d ignored those subtle signals—if I’d prioritized “compliance” over his wellbeing—I could have made it worse. Instead, I caught it early.

This is what listening looks like. This is what force-free training actually means: honoring your dog’s voice before a small issue becomes a big one.

🧠 What does your dog’s gut have to do with their behavior? More than you might think!

The gut and brain are constantly communicating through what’s known as the gut–brain axis. This two-way communication means that what’s happening in the body can influence the brain—and stress and emotions can influence the digestive system, too.

Does that mean changing your dog’s food will magically fix anxiety or reactivity? Nope! Behavior is much more complicated than that.

But digestive discomfort, pain, illness, poor sleep, stress, and other changes in physical wellbeing can affect how a dog feels and how much they’re able to cope with.

That’s why we like to look at the whole dog when behavior changes. Training matters, but so do health, nutrition, environment, enrichment, rest, and stress.

If your dog suddenly starts behaving differently—especially alongside digestive or other physical symptoms—a conversation with your veterinarian is a great place to start. 🐾
