What is Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia in Poodles?

IMHA stands for Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. It's a serious condition where a dog's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. Because red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body, IMHA can make a dog very sick, sometimes in a matter of days or even hours.

One of the scary things about IMHA is how quickly it can happen. A dog may seem perfectly normal one day and become extremely sick the next.

Common signs can be any of these
- Tiredness or weakness
- Pale or yellow gums
- Loss of appetite
- Rapid breathing or increased heart rate
- Dark orange, red, or brown urine
- Collapse

Sometimes IMHA comes about after infections, certain medications, cancer, or other health conditions happen. In many cases an underlying cause is never found. There are questions about a possible hereditary component to immune-mediated diseases, including IMHA. While genetics may have something to do with it, it's complex and there isn't a simple way to see if a dog will get it or is at risk of getting it.

Unfortunately, there is no DNA test available that can tell breeders whether a Poodle will develop IMHA. It's also not something that routine OFA health testing can rule out because a dog will be fine until they aren't.

This is one reason I feel it's so important for breeders to stay in contact with their puppy families, even years after a puppy goes home. Knowing what health concerns develop in our dogs and their relatives helps us reduce risk.

If you notice any of these symptoms, please don't wait to contact your veterinarian. IMHA can be life-threatening, and getting treatment started quickly is incredibly important. I also think it's very important that every pet owner carry insurance on their dog as a medical emergency can be extremely expensive.

Marble & Relic are looking for their perfect 🏠’s! 👀

Marble (black collar) is a brindle pointed phantom who is expected to mature to be around 45lbs. He is a fun, affectionate puppy who would make an excellent family companion. He is food motivated, and is very smart with his nose, making him fun to train. He will be very easy to live with having medium energy and having a good off switch. His playful personality will make him a great fit for a family or someone looking for a fun everyday companion. He can be a little vocal with barking from excitement at times, but overall his temperament makes him especially well suited to being a loving, fun household pet and family dog.

Relic(orange collar) is one of the smallest puppies solid, expected to mature to be in the low 40’s range weight wise. He is a bit higher drive, and extremely handler oriented who loves to interact with people. He is very toy motivated, has some food motivation, and is eager to engage. He is also VERY birdy. He will be a very fun puppy to train! Relic is very affectionate and snuggly, a good ability to settle, and a nice balance of energy, drive and biddability. He was a bit more sensitive to the startle exercises on his temperament tests, but he had good recovery! He would be a great fit for someone looking for an handler oriented, biddable, trainable puppy who wants to play, learn, and do things with his person. He definitely has potential for sports as well!
