I've been slacking on creating graphics. Mostly those in accordance with what we will be doing and where. We've added additional dates with service areas.

Every time I take a break from posting consistently our virtual reach is absolutely trashed. If you wouldn't mind helping us increase our reach by sharing to local groups, liking/commenting, or copying the link, we would greatly appreciate the help.

October through January is generally the hardest time of the year for me. I've lost many of my cherished animals during these months to things out of my control. Grace, kindness, and patience is always welcomed.

I've been doing a lot of R&R. I've strained my shoulder, my hip flexor, and my Achilles tendon in the last month because my body is tired. Michael will be doing more of the scheduled posts for the remainder of the year beginning in November.

Balance isn't always pretty.

Sometimes when toes have gone so long without a trim they require an ugly phase to get them back to normal. Sometimes I leave a tiny bit more than I would like to, to adjust the growth for next time.

This guy is one of a few pigs I did just that. He's one I would consider "flat footed". His toes don't grow out at that 45° angle most pigs accomplish to give you that perfect piglet toe.

I took a lot more toe and left more heel in hopes to encourage the tips of his toes to touch the ground. That way he'd wear more of his own toe instead of growing it straight into the sky to curl over.

Most of this is conformation and his overall mechanics (the way he moves). Though some of this growth pattern is prolonged damage to the inner laminae.

We'll see him in another four months in hopes to do some more work to his toes and see how he grows. An ideal trim cycle depends on the pig, but most require that 4-6 month cycle to stay comfortable.

This is our "local" area. We are based out of Alvin, TX (blue dot on map). Those local to Alvin pay a $50 travel fee.

We service inside this dotted radius at least once a week, sometimes twice depending on schedules and levels of interest.

We split our local area into two halves "North" and "South". If we have increased interest in a localized area we condense the area into quadrants of NW | NE | SW | SE.

Typically we work North to South as most of our clients are local to either Spring/Tomball/Magnolia or League City/Pasadena/Texas City with a few handful sprinkled between.

For all routes, including local, if we can get 3 people in a 15 mile radius of another we can reduce the travel fee. That requires a lot of team work between us with your help sharing posts to your local Facebook groups.

Our trimming costs are determined by the condition of hooves at the time of service. We are a solely filing method trimmer. Our primary tool is the Hoof Boss paired with a rotary tool using a diamond drum.

The overgrowth does do more damage to our tools than maintenance trims. Pigs kept on shorter trim cycles have a more affordable associated cost. The ideal condition is perfect "piglet" toes.

We absolutely love providing transformations and there is a higher cost for longer toes due to our equipment. If you need help, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Texas → Mississippi → Louisiana

We would like to add to our day in Mississippi but to achieve that travel we would need either a total of 2 separate stops in a 30 mile radius of Tupelo, MS or 2 separate stops along the route of Tupelo to Jackson, MS.

As of now, we have 4 active trimming days.

> October 23rd - Bogalusa to Baton Rouge
> October 25th - Baton Rouge to Lafayette/Lake Charles
> October 26th - Alternate for Baton Rouge to Lafayette if we have more in Baton Rouge or New Orleans than we can fit on a single day.

What does a healthy weight look like?

The ideal body score for a potbelly pig is a 3. Up to a 4 can be manageable, but if your pig is ever stepping on or tripping over their belly, bigger health concerns are more likely to follow. (Body score charts at the end of the photos).

Diet and Exercise

An average pig diet — with grazing or foraging included — is ½–2 cups of food per day depending on the pig and their environment. Some pigs thrive on more, some on less.

Wild pigs spend 82% of their day foraging, and the near-constant movement is what keeps them fit. A companion pig's diet and exercise should at least moderately reflect that of their ancestors if you want them as healthy as possible, for as long as possible.

The weight is easy to put on a pig, but boy is it hard to get back off.

If your pig needs to lose weight, there are several ways to help:
- Switch to a pig-formulated pelleted feed
- Reduce sugar and starch
- Gradually reduce portion size
- Increase exercise and grazing time
- Supplement with veggies (mostly greens) to help them feel full
- Build a dry lot area with a feeding mat that they can search for a smaller portion of food on.
- Limit morning graze time. Short grass is highest in sugar in the early morning when the dew is still drying.

Real examples

🐷 Abigale [1st image] was previously being fed five cups a day and wasn't burning enough calories to need that amount. She was gradually reduced to 1 ½ cups once a day, with grazing and veggies supplemented to help her feel full.

The changes speak for themselves: her belly receded, the fat around her jowls, ears, and eyes reduced, her ears hang looser, and her legs are no longer in a constant splay.

🐷 Hamlet [2nd image] needed only a diet change to reduce his dragging belly — from a corn-heavy diet with kitchen scraps, to a pig-formulated pellet diet with healthy snack choices and grazing. He received ½ a cup of food per day, as most of his dietary needs came from grazing and rooting.

🐷 Miss Piggy [3rd image] is the heartbreaking case of a pig who died because of the weight she carried. Fed dog food, popcorn, and sweets, it was incredibly hard to transition her to proper pig food after years of all the wrong things. Even after the switch, her body struggled. She struggled to move out of the sun, get to and from the wallow, and simply be a pig. A combination of factors led to a heat stroke that caused a heart attack.

KuneKune & Mini Pig Weight

I wanted to highlight BS 1 & BS 5 as being the worst for your KuneKune &/or Mini Pig. Neither is of healthy condition, and both have detrimental effects. A pig that is obese is at risk of the same things that an obese human is at risk of. A starving pig is at risk of the same things that a starving human is at risk of.

Risks of obesity are:
• All-causes of death (mortality).
• High blood pressure (hypertension).
• Type 2 diabetes.
• Coronary heart disease.
• Stroke.
• Osteoarthritis (a breakdown of cartilage and bone within a joint).
• Sleep apnea and breathing problems.
• Many types of cancer.
• Low quality of life.
• Mental illnesses
• Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning.

Risks of prolonged starvation are:
• All-causes of death (mortality)
• Multiple organ failure
> Heart failure
> Respiratory failure
> Reproductive failure
• Osteoporosis or poor bone health
• Mental illnesses
• Muscle atrophy / loss
• Fatal diarrhea due to shrinking of stomach and decreased stomach acid production.
• Impaired mental functionality, irritability, and mood swings/aggression
• Low quality of life
• Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning

As a pig parent, I tried to keep my pigs in the 3-3.5 range depending on their stature. As a hoof trimmer, I would rather see Body Scores of 3 & 4 than any of the others. I say that about most pigs no matter their breed and age.

The only time I will encourage a thinner frame is if there is a genetic abnormality, an injury, or a missing limb to consider. Those three things need a thinner frame in order to live a long life free of most pain and discomfort.

We had the absolute pleasure of providing one of the coolest transformations of our career.

Typically when we get to an overgrowth case we hop straight to work and usually neglect to take photos of before and after.

Even these photos aren't nearly as good as I had hoped they would have been, but they show the true change a single hoof trim can provide.

The first photo was taken at 10:36 and the final photo was taken at 11:32. The only tools used were the Hoof Boss, Milwaukee rotary with a diamond drum, and Gigli wire for his first ever tusk trim.

You can still see that there is some underlying damage to the hoof. That while we did absolutely change his life with bringing him back to balance, we still have a few more trim cycles to get to the full recovery of his hoof wall.

Important Health & Travel Update

We want to share two developments we are closely monitoring because they may affect how we operate in the coming weeks.

🪰 New World Screwworm & Biosecurity

New World screwworm has now been confirmed in animals within Texas and neighboring New Mexico. Unlike ordinary maggots that consume dead tissue, screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and can infest even small wounds. All warm-blooded animals (including pigs, goats, sheep, horses, dogs, cats, wildlife, and people) can be affected.

Hoof cracks, dewclaw injuries, restraint abrasions, trimming nicks, surgical sites, and other open wounds can provide an entry point. Signs may include:

• A wound that becomes larger instead of healing
• Unusual drainage or a foul odor
• Excessive licking, rubbing, irritation, or restlessness
• Visible eggs or larvae
• Sudden swelling or tenderness around a wound

If your animal has an open, draining, foul-smelling, or larvae-containing wound, please tell us before your appointment. Suspicious wounds require immediate veterinary attention and are outside the scope of routine hoof care.

We have always disinfected our boots and trimming tools between properties. That protocol will remain in place, but we are tightening our precautions to include all equipment, restraints, lift surfaces, clothing, footwear, and other items that may have contacted an animal or its environment.

This does not mean an animal or property is “dirty.” It is simply an added layer of protection for every animal and family we visit while this threat is being monitored.

⛽ Fuel Prices & Long-Distance Routes

We are also closely watching the rapid changes in fuel prices.

As things currently stand, an average Austin route costs us a minimum of approximately $300 in gas/gas station stops alone. That amount does not include lunch/dinner, oil changes, tires, repairs, insurance, vehicle depreciation, equipment upkeep, or the many hours spent driving between appointments.

We are not announcing an immediate fee change. However, because we regularly travel 12–14 hours to serve some areas, we must continue evaluating whether our current trip fees and route minimums cover the actual cost of completing those routes safely and reliably.

Clustering appointments remains one of the best ways to make long-distance service sustainable. When several families book within the same area, the cost and travel burden can be distributed more reasonably. We can cut more costs if people within a 15 mile radius book together.

We will continue monitoring both situations and will communicate clearly if any appointment requirements, route availability, or travel fees need to change.
