Riley Green and her boys had a wonderful weekend at Santa Barbara!

Riley showed “Kenny” GCH Barrister Winning Appeal RM CGCU CGCA TKN to win Select Dog in a strong entry on Sunday at the ECSCSC Supported Entry at the Santa Barbara Kennel Club Show! This talented team also won their Novice Senior Class on Thursday and placed on Friday and Saturday. Sunday they didn’t make it to Juniors as it conflicted with our breed ring time but this lovely win made up for it! This team has accomplished a lot in just 9 short months of showing together and they just keep getting better!

Riley also piloted her puppy “Salem” Dunwishin’ Entwood Storm Chaser to win his breed class every day and his sweeps class at the ECSCSC specialty on Saturday, plus 2 lovely Reserve Winners Dog wins to large majors. This is just the beginning for this team!

We couldn’t be more proud to have Riley as part of our Dunwishin’ family!

Kenny is bred by Sally Rosenthal and loved and owned by Carol & Carrie Lindsay and Riley Green

Salem is bred by Carol & Carrie Lindsay and Sue & Troy Frye and owned and loved by Riley & Kerry Green and Carol Lindsay.

Congratulations to all of our friends on their wins this past weekend!

First day of Santa Barbara in the books! Both Salem and Vixen took reserve to the major. Kenny and Riley Green absolutely slayed and took first place in the Open Senior junior handler class.

Most importantly, Bunny and Kenny were their goodest selves at our favorite Santa Barbara winery, the Valley Project!

Salem is Dunwishin’ Entwood Storm Chaser owned by Riley Green, Kerry Green and Carol Lindsay

Vixen is Dunwishin’ Entwood Right as Rain owned by Susan and Troy Frye and Carol Lindsay

All our puppies and big dogs showed beautifully and we are proud of all of them! Congrats to Susan and Troy Frye on Brandy’s Select win and all the other winners today! Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Well, because we like a challenge, we decided to enter the Greater San Diego Basset Hound Club’s all breed Rally trial today, one week before Santa Barbara. Did we really have time to take out of our preparations to go spend half the day at a trial? No. But we did it anyway.

Kenny went for his 4th QQQ (out of the 20 needed) for his Rally Championship, and nailed it, scoring a 98 in Master, 99 in Excellent B and 99 in Advanced B for 26 RACH points! We’re just RACHing along.

Bunny made her first appearance in Excellent with a 99 and 1st place in the A class and her 1st of 3 legs for her RE!

We are so proud of them both!

Thank you the GSDBHC and the San Diego Dog Sports Club for putting on an amazing and smooth running trial and at a wonderful venue. I hope more clubs will utilize this great venue for smaller trials. Such a treat to run in an air conditioned building in August!

Now we have about a gazillion dogs to groom to get ready for the Santa Barbara weekend which starts Thursday with our specialty on Saturday. If you’re in the Southern California area, come see us Aug 20-23 at the Earl Warren Arena! PM us for times and details. We’d love to see you!

Kenny got mail! He passed his Advanced Canine Good Citizen test, also known as Community Canine, and added the CGCA title to his name!

AKC offers many titles as part of their Family Dog program that reward dogs and owners for training and being active with their dogs, even if they don’t want to get involved in formal performance or sport events . The CGC path recognizes good manners and behavior in public settings. As you can see on the certificate, Kenny also has his CGCU which is the Urban version of the test, done in a city type environment. Starting with the Puppy STAR and progressing in degree of challenge through CGC, CGCA and CGCU, these tests evaluate skills like walking nicely on a leash, coming when called, sitting politely to be petted by a stranger, being calm and neutral around people and other dogs, ignoring distractions and recovering quickly when something unexpected happens, and other basic obedience behaviors and manners. If your dog doesn’t already have some of these titles, look into classes and testing opportunities near you! You can check the AKC website for a list of evaluators and other information or connect with your local AKC obedience or training club. It’s a great way to bond with your dog and help them become a companion who can go more places and
do more with you! Plus, fancy certificates are just cool!

Today we took Kenny to our favorite winery! To us, owning dogs is about involving them in every part of our lives that we can! A genetically sound, well socialized, well trained dog can have a much bigger life and that’s so important to us. This is why breeding genetically mentally sound dogs with correct temperaments and further developing that with proven socialization and training protocols like the Puppy Culture program and encouraging our new owners to continue training their puppy is so dear to our hearts. While your dog can’t regret a life it never knew, it’s still a vital obligation of dog ownership to make your dog’s world as big as it can be! There is so much mental stimulation being in public spaces and the ability to behave well in those situations is such a good exercise for your dog, but, like people, they lose what they don’t use, so regular outings are an important part of an enriched dog life. Plus it’s just fun to show off your well behaved dog and it adds so much to our life to spend quality time with our dogs in our favorite places.

Kenny has had a couple of busy weekends! Last weekend he got to do the super fun color powder photo with DFlux Photography. This weekend he and Carol Lindsay went to the Hidden Valley Obedience Club - HVOC Obedience and Rally trial where they earned QQQs (qualifying in the master, excellent and advanced classes all in the same day) both days and earned 22 RACH points AND FINISHING HIS RALLY MASTER TITLE!!! They need 20 QQQs and 300 points to earn the RACH (Rally Champion) title. Next weekend catch him back in the conformation and juniors ring with his bestie Riley Green! We love this multi-talented, smart, handsome, good boy so much!

Pending AKC confirmation he is now
GCH Barrister Winning Appeal RM CGCU TKN

Since we have just posted about titles earned and progress on titles, let’s talk about titles. Why do we title our dogs? Well, in part, we do so to prove, in a measurable, objective, recorded way, that our dogs are of sound mind and body and that they conform to the breed standard, that they are a credit to their pedigree and their breeder, that they have something to contribute to the breed gene pool. But what else does a title mean? This was originally written by Sandy Mowery and published in Front and Finish magazine, a publication dedicated to the sport of competitive dog obedience. And it hits me right in the heart every time I read it. A title honors the dog who earned it, and honors the rich shared history of dogs and humans, all the way back to the first canid who bonded with a human. The dog may not know what is written on a certificate or recorded in a database after his name, but he knows the relationship that was built and the time that was spent together to earn it.
