In the coming days, WHS will welcome 150 beagles from Ridglan Farms, as part of a national effort to rescue and rehome 1,500 dogs. This endeavor is being led by Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy, and other partners, including the Dane County Humane Society, Wisconsin Federated Humane Societies, Wisconsin Puppy Mill Project, Inc, and other Wisconsin animal welfare groups.

This is how you can help:
🐾 Become a foster family!
If you are not yet an approved foster family, start that process directly from our website at wihumane.org/foster/apply 👈

🐾 A single intake of 150 dogs will require some extra resources.
If you are able to donate supplies, you can do so from our Wishlist at: https://wihumane.me/WHSAmazonWishlist or by dropping off supplies at any of our locations.

🐾 Those interested in making a donation to help these animals can do so online at https://wihumane.me/Beagles2026 👈

The beagles cared for by WHS will be available for adoption once they are medically and behaviorally cleared. Those interested in adoption should review the adoption process at www.wihumane.org/adopt in the coming days and weeks.

Community support truly makes it possible for WHS to help large-scale rescues like this, and we couldn’t be more proud to be part of an effort making a difference for animals and the people who love them.
Thank you! ❤️

On this day in 1881, Old Abe, the famed War Eagle from Wisconsin, died in the arms of his caretaker after a short illness resulting from smoke inhalation caused by a small fire in the Capitol days before.
Old Abe was carried at the head Eight Wisconsin Regiment during the Civil War and served to rally the regiment and the entire Union Army throughout the war. After his service, Old Abe lived in a dedicated apartment in the basement of the Wisconsin State Capitol Building. As a national emblem, he traveled the country appearing at Grand Army of the Republic reunions, various fairs, and centennial celebrations throughout the country. He was a stellar fundraiser for causes benefiting Civil War soldiers and sailors.
As his death announcement from the March 28, 1881 edition of the Wisconsin State Journal reads, “No other ‘war relic’ in all history, has had anything like the fame awarded to the grand old soldier bird of Wisconsin. His loss to the State is a genuine one, for he as perhaps tended more than any other one thing in it, to make Wisconsin known abroad. And thousands of Veterans will drop genuine tears on hearing the news.”

And by "you" - the animal meant their human.
❤️🧡💛

This animal was touchingly both truthful and gentle with their human, as they pointed to a life lesson that was being taught.

We have so much to learn from the animals, and a direct message is truly a gift!

In honor of, and with respect for, the animals,
Shari 🥰

Feeling immense gratitude after meeting so many wonderful people and dogs at Pet Expo MKE!!!!
🐕‍🦺🩵🦮

It was an incredible event, and I was fortunate to have great conversations with so many kind, and often curious, people.

Whether the conversation started with, "I believe in what you do," or "How do you do what you do" - it was interesting and fun to answer questions and hear about everyone's beloved babies.

The day also cemented the fact that midwesterners are so incredibly nice, and that animal people have huge hearts.

So much joy. So grateful. Thank you!

Please spread the word. Bread is bad for waterfowl!
🦆🪿🦆

Bad enough to cause algae in their water, and bad enough to cause their wings to become deformed.

Please choose veggies like peas or broccoli, or visit a pet food supplier for some cracked corn.

Generations have been well-intentioned when bringing their stale bread to feed the ducks, but it's time to start safer traditions.

In honor of, and with respect for, the animals,
Shari 🩵
