Vet Tech Appreciation Week! This week is meant to specifically honor the vet techs out there who do so much for our field! While we feel it is important to respect that title and license, we are using this week to celebrate our full staff! Whether it's the friendly smile greeting you at the front desk, the assistant helping you in the room and comforting your pet, the kennel assistant keeping everything clean, or the inventory manager making sure we have what we need when we need it, the whole team works together to support our doctors and all of you! Let's hear it for the staff of the Garrett Vet family!

We have been meaning to share this amazing success story for a while! This sweet little ferret came to us a few weeks back after a trauma that no one would expect her to survive. She was stepped on by a horse! Realistically, that is an animal literally almost 100 times her weight. Her owners rushed her in as fast as they could. Our team went to work straight away to assess and stabilize her. Her abdomen was rapidly filling with blood, she was having trouble breathing due to crush injuries in her chest including damaged lungs, several broken ribs, a pneumothorax (air trapped outside the lungs) and bleeding in her chest cavity. We talked about trying to transfer to an exotics or critical care center, but there was too much risk she wouldn’t survive the transport. This little fighter wasn’t ready to give up, so neither were we! We were able to stabilize enough to slow the internal bleeding and try to control her pain. We borrowed a makeshift mini oxygen cage from our friends at Night Owls Wellness and Urgent Care, and kept her as comfortable as we could. We adjusted the plan as needed, and we monitored diligently. She stabilized and started feeling better and better! After a few days in the hospital she was ready to go home and rejoin her friends and family! She’s continued from there to make a wonderful recovery. We are so blessed to have the opportunity to be part of cases like this! Thank you for trusting us with your pets of any species.

It's October! And while we don't love all the dark and spooky, we always love opportunities for fun with our pets! That's why we are bringing back our Howl-o-ween Pet Costume Contest! The clinic will be closed and phones unattended from 12-1 pm today for our annual staff anesthesia training! We appreciate your patience and we will return your calls after 1 pm

We are so proud of our team. Monday we fit in 8 extra emergencies, some of which were walk-ins with no warning, on top of our full schedule. Unfortunately, that meant two employee-owned pets had to take a back seat for their own urgent needs while we worked on everyone else. However, after all of that we still had people getting angry that we couldn't take on more emergencies! I urge all of you to remember that we are not an emergency clinic, and there are emergency options within a 20 minute drive ready and waiting to help. While we do our best to fit in as many as we can, we are limited by the laws of time and space. If we are turning you away, please know it is only because we cannot reasonably be there for you and still take care of our other patients. Getting angry on the phone or trying to use emotional blackmail is not going to change the fact that we only have so many hours in the day, and it isn't fair to the staff member trying to help you. Please remember to be kind. We are here to help, and we want to be able to continue helping as many animals in our community as we can.

We love to share a happy story! Recently, we got a call from a very worried dog owner whose pregnant dog had been in labor for a couple hours with a sac protruding but no other progress. Now typically, we would have expected this to be a sad story where at least the leading pup if not all were already deceased. However, when we checked with the ultrasound we saw heartbeats! Living puppies! The heart rates were starting to move toward the low end, indicating distress! Time was of the essence! Our team jumped into action with the owner’s permission and got little mama to surgery ASAP! She had only two puppies inside, and folks, BOTH survived! They were even ready to latch and nurse before mom was even awake! We are so proud of our team and so thankful these owners entrusted us with the care of mom and babies!

Happy story Saturday!

This sweet, but very sick little ferret came to see us on Monday. She had been vomiting and couldn’t keep anything down. Her owner let us know that she, like most ferrets, has a tendency to try to eat things she isn’t supposed to, and he was worried she had something blocking her intestines. Through examination, x-rays, and ultrasound, Dr. Jess confirmed this suspicion. After overnight hospitalization and fluids, our team took her to surgery the next morning, and found that the obstruction was part of one of her favorite toys! The object was removed and she was in her owner’s arms for a visit, ready for some treats only a couple hours later! She stayed with us another night to be sure she would be ok at home and she did great! Her owner says she has continued to recover at home, and he is taking steps to try to avoid a repeat offense!

Ferrets are amazing, curious little creatures! However, that curiosity can get them into trouble when they eat things they shouldn’t. It is so important to keep your ferrets in safe areas, well-controlled spaces or try to “ferret proof” your home if they are allowed time to roam! Providing your ferret with safe, stimulating, monitored toy time can help to satisfy their curious, playful nature while reducing the risk of foreign object ingestion. When possible, they also love to have a buddy to play with.

We are so thankful in this case the owner chose to bring her in right away instead of waiting. Early intervention significantly improves the likelihood of a positive outcome like this story. We can’t wait to watch our new little friend thrive at her follow up visits!
