🤷♀️💯
🐓 Unpopular opinion time!
You do NOT have to breed toward SOP to be a responsible breeder.
And I swear sometimes it feels like some of the big breeders are personally offended by those of us out here breeding pretty chickens that the average person can actually afford. 🤣
Listen. I appreciate a gorgeous SOP Silkie. I really do.
But I am never going to look at one of my chickens and think, “Well unfortunately her butt isn’t round enough, her p**f is approximately 3/4 of an inch too small and that third toe is looking a little suspicious, so clearly she has no business reproducing.” 😂
That’s just not why I do this.
I like pretty colors. I like playing with genetics. I like opening the incubator—or these days checking under one of my 47 broody hens 😂—and having NO idea what weird little fluffy thing I’m about to find.
And most of the people buying chickens from me aren’t looking for the next grand champion.
They want a pretty, healthy chicken for their backyard that they can enjoy.
That’s it.
And can we talk about the prices for a second?! 😳
Hundreds of dollars for a hen. $500… $600+ for a rooster.
Y’ALL.
Maybe I’m a terrible businesswoman, but I would feel guilty taking that much money from somebody for a chicken. 🤣 I don’t care if that man has five perfectly straight toes, the roundest butt God ever created and a p**f with the exact circumference required by the chicken gods.
He’s still out there eating bugs and pooping on himself. 😂
Meanwhile poor Brenda is over there with her $50 mauve Silkie just trying to live her life, and apparently she’s single-handedly destroying years of careful breeding. 🤣
LEAVE BRENDA ALONE.
And sometimes I really do wonder if that’s where some of the hate for “backyard breeders” comes from.
Because here come people like me—and Brenda 😂—producing healthy, pretty, fun birds at prices regular chicken people will actually pay.
Am I breeding toward SOP? Nope.
Do I pretend that I am? Also nope.
I take care of my birds, I’m honest about what I’m breeding, I care where they go, and I’m having a whole lot of fun doing it.
So call me a backyard breeder. 🤷🏻♀️
That’s quite literally where my chickens live anyway.
And Brenda and I will be over here minding our business. 🤣🐓
