Fox had always been a collector. Not of toys or treats—but of hair ties. The tiny, stretchy treasures were simply irresistible to a curious orange cat with a talent for mischief. One by one, they disappeared… as if by magic.

Until one day, Fox didn’t feel quite like himself.

After being seen at an urgent care, Fox was referred to East Carolina Animal Emergency (ECAE) for further evaluation. His family knew something wasn’t right—and they were absolutely correct. Imaging revealed the truth behind the missing hair ties: they were tangled together inside his GI tract, creating a dangerous obstruction.

What followed was a different kind of adventure for this orange explorer.

Our surgical team stepped in, carefully and methodically removing each hair tie—one after another—freeing his intestines from the stretchy trap. It was delicate, meticulous work, but Fox handled it like the brave boy he is.

And the best part?

Fox is now back home, feeling so much better, and (we hope) officially retired from his hair tie collecting days.

His story is a reminder that even the smallest household items can turn into big emergencies—especially for clever cats who like to keep their own “collections.”

We’re so grateful the urgent care team helped get Fox where he needed to be, and that his family trusted us with his care. And we’re incredibly proud of this handsome orange boy for his strength through it all. 🧡

Moral of the story: If your cat is a known collector… it might be time to start counting what’s missing.

This week, we celebrate the heartbeat of our front desk—our incredible veterinary reception team. 💙

In emergency medicine, they are often the very first voice you hear in a moment of panic and the first face you see when your world feels like it’s falling apart. They handle the chaos, the tears, the urgent phone calls, and the endless questions with grace, compassion, and strength.

They are the calm in the storm.
They are the comfort in the waiting room.
They are the glue that holds so much together.

Our receptionists do far more than answer phones and check patients in—they advocate, reassure, support, and care deeply for every family and every pet that walks through our doors.

To our amazing reception team: thank you for your patience, your kindness, your resilience, and your heart. This hospital would not run without you, and we are so grateful for everything you do.

Please help us show them some love this week! 🐾✨

Did you know this hospital is privately-owned by the doctor you see on the floor?

We’re not owned by a corporation—but by a veterinarian who took a leap, built something from nothing, and shows up every day to do what she loves most.

In today’s veterinary world, many clinics are part of larger groups. And while those models exist for a reason, she chose a different path—one that allows emergency care to stay personal, flexible, and centered around each individual patient.

Because in the ER, it’s never just another case.

It’s someone’s family. Someone’s best friend. Someone’s whole world.

Thank you for supporting a small business, a dream, and a hospital built with everything I have. 💜🐾

🐣🌷 Happy Easter from your emergency vet team! 🌷🐣

While you’re filling baskets and hiding eggs, we’re here—just in case your holiday takes an unexpected turn. 💛

Easter is full of fun (and treats!), but some of our favorite traditions can be dangerous for our pets. A curious nibble or playful chew can quickly turn into an emergency.

🐾 Take a moment to keep your furry family safe:
– Skip the lilies if you have cats
– Keep that colorful basket grass out of reach
– And remember… chocolate and xylitol are a hard no for pets

We hope your day is filled with wagging tails, happy purrs, and zero ER visits—but if you need us, we’re open from 8pm to 8am Easter night!

🚨 NEW EQUIPMENT ALERT 🚨

After years of research (and a lot of barking), we are proud to introduce our newest life-saving device:

✨ The Bark Translator 3000 ✨

Capabilities include:
• “I’m dying” → “My toy is under the couch”
• “Emergency!!!” → “The cat made eye contact”
• “I haven’t eaten” → “I ate 12 minutes ago”
• “Something is wrong” → “I would like attention immediately”

Early trials have been… incredibly revealing.

Unfortunately, the cats have declined participation and are refusing translation services at this time.

April Fool’s 😄

—but if this existed, we’d use it every single shift.

The calm before the storm.

The phone rings.

On the other end is a worried pet owner on their way to the ER. Their dog is struggling to breathe. Their cat was hit by a car. Their pet is seizing.

They’re minutes away.

Inside the hospital, everything shifts.

Oxygen gets turned on.
IV lines are opened and ready.
Emergency medications are drawn up.
Monitors are turned on.
The treatment table is cleared and prepared.

For a few brief moments, there is a quiet anticipation. The room is ready. The team is ready.

Then the doors open, and the emergency begins.

When you’re able to call ahead, those few minutes make a difference. It allows our team to prepare life-saving equipment and be ready the second your pet arrives.

We hope you never need us in an emergency. But if you do, know that behind these doors there is a team preparing for your pet before you even pull into the parking lot.

📞 If your pet is experiencing an emergency, calling ahead helps us be ready: 252-580-2032
