Does your pup have allergies?
This time of year, our furry friends can suffer from allergies as much as we can. Yes, there are medications, shots, etc. that a vet can give them, but there are some natural helps as well. Here are a few. As always, check with your trusted pet care provider before initiating anything new.

These are often the biggest wins.
Frequent bathing with a gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo
Removes pollen, dust, and allergens from the coat. Oatmeal or aloe-based shampoos are common choices.
Wipe paws and belly after outdoor time
Many dogs react to grass, pollen, or road chemicals. A simple wipe-down can dramatically reduce itching.
HEPA air purifier
Helps with dust mites, dander, and airborne allergens.
Wash bedding weekly in hot water
Reduces dust mites and environmental irritants.
Switch to stainless steel or ceramic bowls
Some dogs react to plastic and you can throw stainless steel or ceramic bowls in the dishwasher to reduce allergens that may be on their muzzle as well as bacteria, mold, etc.

These donโt replace medical treatment but can meaningfully support the skin and immune system.
Omegaโ3 fatty acids (from fish oil or algae oil)
These are one of the most evidence-backed natural supports for itchy skin. They help reduce inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier.
Probiotics
A healthy gut microbiome can help regulate immune responses.
Novel protein or limited-ingredient diets
If food allergies are suspected, some dogs improve dramatically when switched to a protein they havenโt eaten before (e.g., duck, venison, rabbit).
Avoid common triggers
Chicken, beef, dairy, wheat, and soy are the most frequent food allergens in dogs.

These can soothe symptoms without medication.
Aloe vera gel (pure, no additives)
Soothes hot spots and irritated skin.
Coconut oil (topical)
Helps moisturize dry, itchy skin. Some dogs tolerate it well; others donโt, so start small.
Chamomile or green tea rinse
Brewed and cooled tea can calm inflamed skin.
Colloidal oatmeal baths
Classic, gentle relief for itching.

If your dog is still excessively itchy, losing fur, getting repeated ear infections, and/or chewing paws until theyโre red thatโs a sign the allergies may need medical support. A vet can help rule out infections or other conditions that mimic allergies.
